The historic victory, secured after 35 Tests during the 2005 Zimbabwe Tour of Bangladesh, sparked celebrations across the country, marking a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s cricketing history.
On This Day In 2005: Nearly two decades ago on this day in 2005, Bangladesh scripted history by winning their first match in Test cricket. They clinched their maiden win against Zimbabwe on January 10 in Chittagong. They outclassed Zimbabwe in both innings of the opening Test, showcasing their improved skills and determination to win the match by 226 runs.
The historic victory came after 35 Tests, in the 2005 Zimbabwe Tour of Bangladesh. It resulted in jubilations all over the Asian country, marking a significant moment in their cricketing history.
Bangladesh bowler Enamul Haque jnr was awarded the Player of the Match for his game-winning 6/45 spell.
The first Test began with Bangladesh winning the toss and choosing to bat first in Chittagong. Skipper Habibul Bashar led his side’s innings with a 94-run knock, smashing 15 boundaries. He formed a formidable partnership with Rajin Saleh who added another 89 runs in 182 deliveries.
Saleh smashed one six and 10 boundaries in the innings. Mohammad Rafique scored another 69 runs to help Bangladesh reach 488.
Zimbabwe were held to a 312-run total in their first innings, courtesy of a five-wicket haul from Mohammad Rafique. Zimbabwe captain Tatenda Taibu and his teammate Elton Chigumbura made the most impact with the willow, adding 92 and 71 runs, respectively.
In the second innings, Bangladesh skipper Habibul Bashar scored another half-century. He declared after the Asian side had put 204 runs on the board with the loss of 9 wickets.
The final innings of the match saw Zimbabwe struggle with the bat as Barney Rogers and Vusi Sibanda were dismissed for ducks. Hamilton Masakadza kept Zimbabwe in contention for a win by scoring a half-century. His wicket was eventually scalped by Enamul Haque jnr.
The Bangladesh bowler combined with Mashrafe Mortaza and Tapash Baisya to dismiss Zimbabwe for 154.
The historic win was followed by a draw in the second Test of the series in Dhaka. Batting first, Zimbabwe had put up scores of 298 and 286 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Bangladesh added 211 runs in their first innings before finishing at 285/5 in the second. Zimbabwe’s Tatenda Taibu was awarded the Player of the Match for his knocks of 85 not out and 153. The draw saw Bangladesh win the two-match series 1-0, their first red-ball series triumph in international cricket.
