Mohammed Siraj was simply unplayable during the Asia Cup 2023 final as the star pacer picked up a six-wicket haul to help India win their record-extending 8th Asia Cup title. Siraj led the way in the first innings with his fiery spell giving away just 21 runs in his spell in return for six wickets to bundle out the co-hosts of Asia Cup 2023 for a paltry total of 50 runs.
Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan breezed through the chase as the two openers completed the required 51-run target in just 6.1 overs helping India record their shortest successful chase in the history of ODI cricket, which was also the fifth successful shortest chase of all time.
Not only did Siraj register his first six-wicket haul from his ODI career, the 29-year-old shattered numerous other records during a glorious display in the final.
Check the list of records surpassed by Siraj during his fiery six-wicket spell in the Asia Cup 2023 final:
Siraj became the first ever Indian bowler to pick up four wickets in a single over in ODI cricket, thereby etching his name in the history books.
The star pacer also matched the tally of former Sri Lanka great Chaminda Vaas for the fastest five-wicket haul in ODI cricket, as Siraj needed just 16 balls to hunt down five batters.
Siraj also matched former Pakistan great Waqar Younis’ glorious record for the best figures against Sri Lanka in ODI cricket. Siraj got six wickets conceding 21 runs while Younis had scalped six against the Lankans giving away 26 runs in Sharjah in 1990.
Siraj’s heroics helped him register the second-best bowling figures in the history of the Asia Cup finals.
The Hyderabad-born cricketer joined former India greats Stuart Binny (6/4), Anil Kumble (6/12) and Jasprit Bumrah (6/19) in an exclusive club.
The Asia Cup final was Siraj’s 29th ODI match in Indian colours, he needed just 1002 balls to complete a tally of 50 wickets which is the second quickest in the history of the format.
Sri Lanka legend Ajantha Mendis is the fastest to fifth ODI wickets as he reached the milestone in 847 balls.
Only Mendis had picked up a six-wicket haul in ODI Asia Cups before Siraj, the Sri Lanka great achieved the feat against India in 2008.
Mohammed Siraj is only the 11th Indian bowler in the history of ODI cricket to pick up a six-wicket haul, his tally of 6/21 is the fourth-best bowling figures in ODI cricket by an Indian, and 31st overall in the format.
