The Department of School Education and Literacy, under the Ministry of Education, has commenced the online registration process for the National Merit Cum Means Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS). Eligible students willing to apply can visit the official website of the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in. Candidates should be aware that the last date to apply for the scholarship is November 30.
This scholarship will be awarded to meritorious students in classes 9 to 12 belonging to economically weaker sections. The aim of providing NMMS scholarships is to lessen the dropout rate of students studying in class 8 and encourage them to continue their education at the secondary stage.
Applicants must note that students whose parental income from all sources is not more than Rs 3,50,000 per annum are eligible for the scheme, according to the details available. In addition to that, to appear in the selection test for the award of the NMMS scholarship, students must have secured at least 55 per cent marks or equivalent grades in the class 7 exam. However, those belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories will be given a 5 percent relaxation in the minimum qualifying marks.
Before issuing the scholarship, the student will go through two levels of verification for the applications on NSP. The first verification round will be at the institution or school level by the Institute Nodal Officer (INO), which will be held on December 15, whereas the second verification round will be done by the District Nodal Officer (DNO), which will be conducted on December 30.
NMMS SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME RENEWAL
As per the ministry, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded to selected students from class 9 annually upon their continuation or renewal in classes 10 to 12 for students studying in state government, government-aided, and local body schools. The ministry further informed that the students are awarded a scholarship of Rs 12,000 per annum.
The scholarship amount is disbursed directly into the bank accounts of the shortlisted students by electronic transfer through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) following Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode.
The Mission Mode Project (MMP) of the National Scholarships Portal under the National e-Governance Plan is a one-stop solution through which various services starting from student application, sanction, application receipt, processing, and disbursal of various scholarships to Students are enabled. This initiative aims to ensure the timely disbursement of Scholarships to students, provide a common portal for various Scholarship schemes of Central and State Governments, and create a transparent database of scholars.
