Uttar Pradesh Viral Video: The five-second clip showed men raining punches, kicks and using batons to thrash a sub-inspector (SI) rank official.

A video of a policeman being attacked and beaten by a mob in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba district has gone viral. The five-second clip showed men raining punches, kicks and using batons to thrash a sub-inspector (SI) rank official.

The incident took place on Monday when policemen had gone to clear a traffic jam. The miscreants also snatched rifles from the men in uniform and fired at them, prompting police to retaliate in self-defence.

According to a report in India Today, people were protesting in Mahoba’s Panwari area after the death of a 13-year-old boy who was run over by a bus when he was going to his home on a bicycle.

The report stated that the boy’s family members, along with locals, laid his body on a road in protest, demanding strict action against the bus driver and compensation.

Upon receiving the information about the road-blockade, SI Ram Avtar reached the location with his team to clear it. But the mob attacked him with sticks, the publication mentioned.

Officials said on Tuesday that five people, including three police personnel, were injured in the clash.

Superintendent of Police, Mahoba, Aparna Gupta said a case was registered against some people, and subsequently, five people were arrested.

“On Tuesday, when they were being taken for a medical examination, two of them got off the vehicle on the pretext of responding to the nature’s call and attempted to flee after snatching the rifles of the policemen.

“They also fired at the policemen. Police, in self-defence, fired at their legs. The two injured miscreants have been identified as Parshuram and Monu,” Gupta said. She added that the two have been sent to a community health centre for treatment.

A sub-inspector and two constables sustained minor injuries in the incident, police said, adding that the injured police personnel are also undergoing treatment at the community health centre. Efforts are on to nab the other accused, police said.
