The K.S.Layout Traffic police were able to trace the offenders through the dashcam footage of the incident shared on X.
A senseless act of vandalism and road rage was caught on a car’s dashcam earlier this month. The footage showed three men riding a scooter. As the scooter reaches near a car, one of the pillion riders forcefully slaps the car’s rearview mirror and breaks it. The triplet then drives away. The footage of this incident was shared online by X user @3rdEyeDude on November 8. In a follow-up post, the account mentioned that the incident occurred at Sarakki signal, in Bengaluru, and shared pictures that showed the scooter’s registration number. The X user was able to track the fines worth Rs 19,500 put on the scooter through the KarnatakaOne Web Portal.
These posts soon caught the attention of the K.S.Layout Traffic police and they traced the vehicle within hours. As per the Times of India report, the scooter was traced to an address in Jayanagar. It was registered in the name of a homemaker who told the police that her 21-year-old son Rohit uses the scooter. It was found out that at the time of the incident, Rohit’s friend was riding the scooter.
So far, the police have confiscated the vehicle and have registered cases for triple riding and riding without helmets. The owner has been asked to pay a fine of Rs 21,500 in fines for a total of 41 violations. The police told The Times of India that “Rohit’s mother was shocked on seeing the video and shouted at her son. When we asked him as to why he smashed the mirror, Rohit calmly replied that he was under the influence of alcohol and did it for fun.”
Reportedly, the KS Layout police also spoke to the car owner. The car owner told the police that he was under the impression that the mirror broke accidentally. “I heard some noise and on looking around, saw the gearless scooter pass by my car. On stopping the car, I realised that the mirror was broken. But I never thought the youth had broken it for fun,” he said. Police said they would take a complaint from the car owner too and book the offenders for road rage.
