Some masked men, carrying arms, on Friday looted Rs 1.5 crore from an ATM cash-loading van in the Godijharia area in Odisha’s Cuttack. Police said the incident took place in the district’s Athgarh area when around 7-8 unidentified men allegedly intercepted the cash van using an SUV and motorcycles, threatened the driver and security guard, and looted the vehicle.

On being informed about the incident, police reached the spot and initiated a probe to identify and nab the robbers.

“We were returning after loading cash in an ATM machine when an SUV stopped in front of us. Some masked men carrying pistols and sharp weapons threatened us and snatched my rifle. Then the robbers took the cash trunk and fled from the spot,” said Ranjan Kumar Dehury, the van’s security guard. Cash loader Sanjay Swain said the criminals also took away their mobile phones after snatching the cash box.

Police said, “We have formed three teams to arrest the criminals. We have sealed entry and exit points at different locations. We are also in touch with police in neighboring districts.”

Back in 2021, a similar heist took place where Cuttack Rural SP Mihir Panda expedited the investigation and traced the accused.
