Multan Sultans picked up a 13-run win over Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League to hand the latter their first defeat of the season on Sunday.

Reeza Hendricks scored 72 runs while skipper Mohammad Rizwan’s 51 powered Multan to a total of 180 for the loss of 4 wickets. Tayyab Tahir chipped in with a 35-run contribution off 22 balls.

Quetta could only manage to make 167 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20-over quota as Multan’s Mohammad Ali and David Willey ran through the Gladiators with figures of 3-19, and 3-37 respectively.

Willey had a lapse in concentration early on in the game as he dropped the chance to get rid of Saud Shakeel while the batter was at just 5 runs off 4 deliveries.

Ultimately, the miss did not turn out as costly as it could have as Multan edged out the Gladiators with the Englishman sending Shakeel back to the dugout at 24 off 13 deliveries.

Willey went on to add the wickets of Sherfane Rutherford and Muhammad Wazir for 21 and 1 respectively to his tally to boslter his side’s position in the game.

Ali, who also added three wickets to his name against the Gladiators in the win, is now the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 13 scalps.

Multan’s four wins in five home games gave last year’s finalist eight points while Quetta, which won three successive games before Sunday’s loss, is second with six points. Multan’s only setback to date came at the hands of Peshawar Zalmi.

“You can’t get satisfied because it will be a different challenge when we play our five away games,” Rizwan said.

Ali got rid of Jason Roy for 12 runs as he clipped the Englishman’s off stump in his second over.

Rilee Rossouw made 30 while Pakistani youngster Khawaja Nafay added 36 runs to get Quetta back into the reckoning.

Rossouw fell to a brilliant low catch by Khushdil Shah in the covers that ended a threatening 62-run stand and Ali had Nafay caught off a slower ball in his return spell as Quetta’s chase got derailed after it slipped to 124-5 in the 15th over.

Rizwan was dismissed after bringing up his half-century and Hendricks fell in the last over when he was caught in the deep.
