AR Rahman talks about Aadujeevitham, Amar Singh Chamkila and working with Imtiaz Ali in an exclusive chat with News18.

AR Rahman has been someone who has always been ahead of his time and has gifted generations with timeless playlists. From Roja to Chamkila, his journey in the industry has seen him take Indian music all around the world. He is also among the one of those who are credited to have put India so highly on the global map when it comes music. Back with yet another Malayalam film, Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life, Rahman has once again proved why he is the OG G.O.A.T.

In an exclusive interview with News18, the Academy-award winner opened up about working on the Malayalam film. He confessed that director Blessy and the script convinced him to give this project so much time and dedication. Director Blessy has been working on this project for the last 16 years and Rahman himself has been associated with it for more than eight years. “I think a movie like this can be completely destroyed by doing the wrong music. It would seem correct, but it would be wrong, completely. Suppose if somebody is sad, and you put sad music, [it is] end of the story,” he said.

Explaining his point further, he added, “(With) today’s audience, you have to super careful when you are engaging them, what would engage them and challenge them by countering to what’s happening on the screen. We are playing multiple roles here – one is destiny’s point of view, director’s point of view and one is the main character’s point of view. So, we are constantly switching. Humanity doesn’t have regions. Everybody can relate to love. What is the sound of that?”

Besides the much-anticipated Aadujeevitham, Rahman has also given music to Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila, which is set to release on OTT next month. When asked him about what convinced him to say yes to Ali’s latest venture, Rahman said, “I love working with Imtiaz. He is very friendly, you know, with certain people work happens [just] like that and there’s no pressure. With him, there’s never been pressure at all. I always wanted to do Punjabi music. I love the potency in the language in music. So, this was a great opportunity.”

But when we asked him about the film and the kind of music it required, he said, “It is a very naughty picture, we had to find the place for music. If you look at it, Chamika is a composer, lyricist and singer. The question I asked was, ‘Why am I needed?’ [Then] I said, oh! We can do this part we can make it like a musical where everybody sings about Chamkila blaming him for the good or the bad. That’s the director’s point of view and that was exciting.”

While Aadujeevitham aka The Goat Life is set to release on March 28, Amar Singh Chamkila is set to release on April 12.
