The 2020 champion Sophia lost the second round match in just 64 minutes.
Thursday was not a good day for Indian players at the Australian Open, the first tennis grand slam event of the year. Divij Sharan was knocked out of the tournament after losing the men’s doubles and Ankita Raina Women’s doubles. In the Women’s Singles, 2020 champion and fourth seed America’s Sophia Kainin suffered a loss. Seeded players like Ashley Barty, Alina Svitolina, Carolina Pliskova reached the third round. On the other hand Rafael Nadal, Stephanos Sitsipas, Andre Rublev reached the third round of the Men’s Singles.
Indian stars lost in straight sets
In the men’s doubles, India’s pair of Divij Sharan and Slovakia’s Igor Zeleni suffered a straight set defeat. The pair of Germany’s Yannick Haffmann and Kevin Kravitz beat the pair of players from India and Slovakia 6–1, 6–4. The match ended in just 64 minutes.
In the women’s doubles, the pair of Ankita Raina of India and Mihayla Buzarenscu of Romania were defeated 6-3, 6-0 by Australia’s Oliva Gadeski and Beninda Vulcuk. The match lasted for 77 minutes. Oliva and Belinda received a wild card entry in this tournament. Ankita Raina was playing in a Grand Slam for the first time. She became the fifth Indian player to qualify for the Grand Slam main event.
Chaya Sophia Kainin lost to Keiya Kneppi
The fourth seed was defeated by Sophia Kainin of America. He was beaten by Estonia’s Kya Kanepi 6-3 6-2 in 64 minutes. The match lasted for 64 minutes. In the Women’s singles, World No.1 Australia’s Ashley Barty beat compatriot Wild Card entry Daria Gavrilova 6–1, 7–6 in consecutive sets. The match lasted for 92 minutes. 5th seed Elina Svitolina defeated America’s Coco Gough 6-4 6-3 in 1 hour, 17 minutes. Sixth seed Carolina Pliskova defeated Danieli Collins 7-5, 6-2.
Nadal won in 1 hour, 47 minutes
World No-2 Spain’s Rafael Nadal, who was competing to win the most Grand Slam titles, won the second round easily. He defeated American qualifier player Michael Mmoh 6–1, 6–4, 6–2 in consecutive sets. The match lasted for an hour, 47 minutes. In the third round, Nadal will face Cameron Nori of Britain. Nori defeated Russia’s Roman Safiulin 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 in another match.
The 5th seed Sitsipas had to contend for five sets against wild card entry Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round match. Sitsipas beat 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 in a match that lasted 4 hours 32 minutes. In another match, seventh seed Andre Rublev beat Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 in consecutive sets.
