Bapu came to Aligarh for the first time in 1916
Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi came to Aligarh for the first time in 1916. For the first time, he had reached Aligarh by train and the youth and students here gave him a warm welcome. After this he came to Aligarh twice more. Every time he definitely met the students and addressed them.
According to writer Chintamani Shukla’s book ‘Immortal Saga of Freedom Struggle’, when Bapu came to Aligarh in 1916, a crowd of people gathered to see him. There was tremendous enthusiasm among the students and youth. Gandhiji was in his Gujarati attire and was wearing dhoti and angrakha. A turban was also worn on his head.
Bapu used to write letters from time to time, motivating the youth to join the freedom struggle.
Gave speech on Hindu-Muslim unity
When Bapu came to Aligarh for the first time, a crowd of thousands of people gathered from the station itself to see him. He was brought in a procession from the station to Malviya Library, after which he addressed the people on the grounds. He gave a powerful speech on Hindu-Muslim unity.
Gandhiji also reiterated the words of AMU founder Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in his speech and said that Hindus and Muslims are the two eyes of this country. Therefore, unless Hindus and Muslims unite, the country will not get independence. Thousands of people had gathered in the packed arena to listen to his speech.
This letter was written by Mahatma Gandhi to Abdul Bari, former secretary of the student union.
Got lifetime membership of AMU Students Union
Mahatma Gandhi came to Aligarh for the second time on 12 October 1920 during the non-cooperation movement. After this, he gave a speech in AMU and stayed in the then Habib Bagh (presently Academic Staff College) of AMU. He was welcomed with full respect in AMU.
Then he gave a speech among the students inside Aligarh Muslim University. His speech took place in front of Strachey Hall of AMU. After Bapu’s speech, the students were so impressed by him that they took him to the Union Hall and gave him the first life membership of the student union. Even at that time Bapu had asked the students to join the freedom struggle.
The exhibition has been organized on October 2 to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti. In which all the things related to Bapu will be kept open for the people.
Wife also came with Bapu for the third time
Mahatma Gandhi came to Aligarh for the third time on 5 November 1929. After this, his wife Kasturba Gandhi also came with him to Aligarh and inspired people to join the freedom struggle. At that time Bapu had appealed to the youth to use Khadi.
The youth were so inspired by Bapu’s appeal that they started burning foreign clothes on Holi. Even inside the campus, students boycotted foreign clothes and burnt them. Muhammad Harsat Mohani, an alumnus of AMU, had given impetus to the Swadeshi movement by opening a Khadi store in Rasalganj.
Bapu’s letters are safe in the museum
Apart from coming to Aligarh, Mahatma Gandhi kept in constant contact with the students and student leaders of AMU. He used to inspire the youth to raise their voice for maximum freedom and take the freedom movement forward by following the path of non-violence.
AMU Librarian Prof. Nishat Fatima told that Bapu had also written letters to AMU student Abdul Majeed Khwaja and former student union secretary Abdul Bari. This letter is still preserved in the museum of Maulana Azad Library of Aligarh Muslim University. Apart from this, more than 600 books written about Gandhiji in Hindi, English, Urdu and Arabic are also in the library.
