Barun Sobti REJECTED Scripts With Kissing Scenes, Citing ‘Not Available’: ‘People Who Wanted To…’ | Exclusive – News18

Barun Sobti will next be seen in SonyLIV’s Raat Jawaan Hai.

Barun Sobti says he rarely had to turn down projects with kissing scenes in them. He adds that he’s not a rich man as he was never greedy or played it safe.

In a career spanning 15 years, Barun Sobti has never kissed onscreen. In fact, the actor, who has engaged in onscreen intimacy (in Kohrra, for instance) and even went fully nude (for a short film titled Derma), states that kissing is a strict no-no for him. Last year, Barun told us that this stance stems from an unspoken promise he made to his then-girlfriend, now wife, Pashmeen Manchanda, as young adults when she asked him if being an actor would mean “going around kissing everyone.”

Now, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, he says, “I haven’t kissed anyone onscreen. However, I’ve rarely had to reject work because of that. I’ve been very, very lucky as the people who wanted to cast me really wanted me, and they were okay with removing the kissing scenes from the script. Maybe they saw my skill set and thought that a kiss wasn’t a very relevant part of the story. If I’ve rejected something, it was mostly because I thought the script wasn’t very good.”

There have been only a handful of times when he had to come up with an excuse about date issues. “Sometimes, the sexual dynamic between two characters is very important to the script. In such instances, there’s no point in requesting them to cut out the kissing. So, at those times, I’ve told them that I’m not available. I only give such scripts a chance when I know we can do without a kissing scene. And whenever I’ve asked if we could remove such scenes, they’ve agreed because they weren’t integral to the story,” he states.

In recent years, with web series like Kohrra and Asur, Barun has been seen pushing the envelope by opting for what some would call unconventional roles. But he feels that taking risks isn’t something new for him. “That’s what got me in. If I had played it safe, I would’ve been a very rich man today, doing very bad work. I’m not very rich, and I’m not very greedy because I know there’s no end to money. I’m glad I have a decent body of work and I’m reasonably well-off, which means I’ve been experimenting throughout my career,” he says.

The actor, who will next be seen in SonyLIV’s Raat Jawaan Hai, admits that years of experience have made him “more nervous, as opposed to confident.” He explains, “I’ve more to lose now—like my credibility. Today, people come up to me and say they’re watching a show because of me. Even people within the industry tell me that. This also means I’ve got a big responsibility now. If two or three things I do don’t work, I’ll be written off like everybody else. The only thing I’m confident about is my art because I work really hard on it,” Barun remarks.
