The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may take a decision on the inclusion of 2 new franchisees in the IPL at the 89th Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held at Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

With this, a decision can also be taken on the meeting related to tax matters, Cricket Committee, new representative of India in ICC and selection of 3 new selectors. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah can represent the board in the ICC.

BCCI sends 23 points agenda to affiliate units

The BCCI also sent a 23 point agenda to all affiliated units 21 days before the meeting. A new vice chairman of the board will also be decided at the meeting. Senior Congress leader Rajiv Shukla’s name will be formally announced as BCCI vice-president. The post has been vacant since the resignation of Mahim Verma.

Adani Group and Goenka Group interested in Ahmedabad franchise

It is believed that 2 new teams will be included in the meeting. However, both teams will get a chance to play in the IPL from 2022 itself. Like the previous edition of the IPL, in 2021, only 8 teams will be competing. Not only this, instead of mega auction, this time also there will be mini auction.

Negotiations are on for the Ahmedabad franchise in the new teams. Both Adani Group and Goenka Group have shown interest in buying the franchise. According to sources, this agenda has been included prominently in the meeting.

There will be mini auction after Mushtaq Ali Trophy

India’s domestic T20 tournament, the Mushtaq Ali Trophy, will end on 31 January. After this, there will be a mini auction in February. The league will start from the second week of April, as the home series with England will last until the last week of March.

A board official told the agency, “There is less time left to induct the new team. There is a shortage of time for tenders, auction of players and bringing all stakeholders together. For this reason, the new team can be included only in 2022.

Broadcast deal with Star to 2021

Another BCCI official said that according to him the number of teams will not increase this year. He said, ‘IPL broadcast deal with Star is till 2021. Because of this, a decision will be made on the new team after the deal is over. In such a situation, apart from the broadcast deal, the value of other commercial things will have to increase. However, a final decision will be taken in the meeting itself.

If 10 teams enter the league, a total of 94 matches will have to be held. In such a situation, a big window will be required for the event, which is difficult in the current season. Many tournaments and series have already been postponed due to Corona last year. All these are to be organized this year. Whereas, T20 World Cup will also be held in India this year.

Jai Shah can represent India in Global Committee

The meeting will also work to find new representatives of ICC and Asian Cricket Council. Jai Shah, the current secretary of BCCI, can represent India in the Global Committee with Sourav Ganguly as before.

The new advisory committee will interview 3 selectors

The meeting can also be decided on 3 new selectors as well as chairman of selectors. A new Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will be formed for this. The committee will select 3 new selectors ahead of the series against England in February. A BCCI official said, “Madanlal, Rudra Pratap Singh and Sulakshana Naik, who were in the previous CAC, were appointed for just one meeting. He chose Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh.

BCCI also talked about forming a technical committee

Quoting a BCCI source, the agency said, ‘The selection committee is part of the cricket committee. Along with this, a technical committee also needs to be formed. These will be the Statutory Sub-Committee. Along with this, the Umpires Sub-Committee can also be formed. In the meeting, issues related to the National Cricket Academy will also be discussed.

Discussion on preparations for T20 World Cup

With this, the preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup in India can also be discussed. Also, cricket can be discussed for inclusion in the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
