Those who practice spirituality whether with an organized religion or on their own, are often referred to as mentally “disabled” by nonbelievers. However the truth is quite the opposite. Spirituality is a powerful tool that can enhance your everyday life. Whatever your individual beliefs are, spirituality connects you with everyone else who believes in something bigger than ourselves.
Oftentimes people find comfort in organized religion because it eliminates the necessity for them to form their own beliefs. This comfort can come from churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, etc. On the other hand, many individuals find a sense of purpose and power in creating their own beliefs and challenging traditional systems. Either way, your individual sense or perception of spirituality will likely change several times throughout your life. Your spirituality, whether conscious or otherwise tends to adapt to events as well as relationships that you experience. If you are unsure where your level of spirituality is, take a moment to reflect on yourself and what you believe and meditation can help you in achieving clarity. Ponder your basic spiritual ideals. Do you believe in a higher power?
Do you believe that things happen for a reason? Challenge your current beliefs and ideals as well as investigate where they came from. Oftentimes people believe certain things because that’s how they were raised or those were the beliefs instilled in them by their parents, relatives or friends.
Really evaluate what you personally believe and create a new set of ideals unique to what you hold as truth. Truth itself is variable, as we all have our own truths. This is why there is so much variance in spirituality itself. There is no right or wrong belief or ideal, for right and wrong do not exist. There is however negative and positive energy. Your thoughts, emotions, words and actions will be reciprocated in the manner they are performed in. The ancient belief of Karma or the idea that “what goes around, comes around” affects what happens in your life. Therefore, you are in control of your life and and can create as beautiful or terrible a life as you want. Any negative thought or action you perform will be returned to you. On the other hand, any positive thought or action you perform will only enhance your level of consciousness and being.
Before you can use your spirituality to shape your life, you must first accept that you have created your reality. You must take responsibility for all of your actions and events that have happened in your life. However it is important to remember that responsibility is not the same as blame. While bad things happen to all of us, and they are not necessarily our fault, we must take responsibility for them and move forward. By blaming others, we give our power as individuals away. Things that happen to us are simply events in our lives. It is our responsibility to move forward from them and to not harbor any negative energy, simply learn. In order to achieve this state meditation is the only way.
Because spirituality is a constantly changing ideal, there is no right or wrong perception. Some people think negatively of those who either have different ideals or who don’t believe altogether. However, truly spiritual people do not judge anyone including themselves. Meditate and take a deep look at yourself and question whether you would like yourself if you met you. Spirituality can heal your soul and set you on the path to true enlightenment.
