- Freedom from box office pressure and global reach will push parallel cinema further
Indian cinema is passing through an interesting phase. On one hand, as soon as the theaters opened, there was a line of masala formula films, and on the other hand, no formula films are also showing their strength in the form of OTT Originals. BAFTA Award nominee Adarsh Gaurav, who made a name for himself in Hollywood with the film ‘The White Tiger’, in an interaction with ‘Dainik Bhaskar’, has admitted that the no formula films of OTT are actually the new digital avatar of the parallel cinema campaign of 70-80s. Huh. The creative freedom and global rich that comes without any commercial pressure will propel this cinema further.
Art films got extension
Adarsh Gaurav told that during the Parallel Cinema Movement in the 70-80s, many makers including Govind Nihalani had made out-of-the-box films. Now the era of OTT no-formula films can be considered as a digital extension of the parallel cinema movement.
According to Gaurav, the best part is that in the newly started parallel cinema, there is absolutely no commercial pressure of the film box office of the makers. The advantage is that you can just focus on creativity. It’s easier now to do new experiments and have your own way of saying what you want to say.

popularity doesn’t matter
Explaining the difference between the making of both masala and art films, Adarsh says that in commercial cinema, people’s choice is the most important. In the selection of both the story and the artist, what will be popular, what will work, it remains to be seen.
Whereas OTT originals do not have commercial pressure, so there is no commercial power here, a strong story is decided and then not popularity, the artists are selected according to the need of that story. This is the reason why new artists, writers and directors are emerging from here.
Advantages of Global Identity
Another big plus point of OTT Originals, says Adarsh, is that there is sure to be a global rich. Like my ‘The White Tiger’ was a Netflix American film. But, she was seen in 151 countries. I got compliments from all countries from Egypt to Australia. A big free movement comes in the life of a man living in Daman, many people were able to relate to this theme. This story not only had a global appeal, but it also got it because of the global platform OTT.
Don’t want stereotype Indian role
The White Tiger was an Indian background film and its characters were also from India. But, says Adarsh, I should not get caught up in the stereotype Indian character in Hollywood. I want Hollywood makers to choose me, not race or skin colour. Do according to your acting ability.
no selection formula
Pratiksha Rao, Film and Licensing Director, Netflix India said that by no formula films, we mean that there are no restrictions regarding format, duration, subject, theme. If the makers want, they can make an anthology of 28 minutes or even a feature film of two hours. It can be comedy, horror or any other story.
Any maker can approach us with just one idea, one script or even with a complete finished film. Just the story and the way it is told should be authentic. We are inviting the story of every corner of India.
Main stream makers on OTT
This creative freedom and experimentation has given opportunity to so many new talents. ‘Bulbul’ met actors like Trupti Dimri and directors like Anvita Dutt. Found directors like Uday Singh Pawar from ‘Upstart’ and Neeraj Udhwani from ‘Maska’.
Now the new twist in the story is that some of the makers of the main stream have also turned towards OTT Originals. Like Vishal Bhardwaj is co-creating the spy thriller ‘Khufiya’ with his favorite main stream actress Tabu and OTT celebs Ali Fazal and Wamika Gabbi. Zoya Akhtar, on the other hand, is going to experiment with a musical film inspired by the ‘Archis’ series. Both the makers are experimenting with the Netflix platform, where they have no risk of commercial success.
Regional cinema has already been experimental as compared to Bollywood. The difference after OTT is that this cinema is getting a global platform. Malayalam film ‘Minal Murali’, based on the story of how a common man who works as a tailoring man becomes superhuman after being struck by lightning, is releasing on Netflix’s global platform on December 24.
