Ajinkya Rahane scored 112 in the first innings of Melbourne Test and 27 not out in the second innings.
The Indian team defeated Australia by 8 wickets in the Boxing-Day Test played in Melbourne. In this, Team India captain Ajinkya Rahane was adjudged Player of the Match. With this, Cricket Australia (CA) awarded Rahane the Mulag Medal. The CA had announced the player of the match medal award before the Test.
Rahane had scored 112 runs off 223 balls in the first innings of the Test. During this, he hit 12 fours. In the second innings, Rahane scored an unbeaten 27 off 40 balls to win the team. Australia had a target of 70 runs in the match.
Test series equal 1-1
The 4-Test series between India and Australia became 1-1. The first match of the series was played day-night in Adelaide. In this, Australia defeated India by 8 wickets to take a 1-0 lead. In the second innings of this match, the Indian team had scored their lowest score of 36 runs in Test history.
Medal named after Johnny Mulag.
The medal is named after 152-year-old Australian captain Johnny Mulag. Mulag was the captain of the Australian team for the first time overseas tour in 1868. This was the team’s England tour. Mulag scored 1698 runs in 71 innings of 45 Tests. He also bowled over 1877. During this time 831 maiden overs were bowled. He took 257 wickets. Mulag also played a Boxing-Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1866.
Boxing-day Test is played from 26 December
The match that takes place every year from 26 to 30 December is called the Boxing Day Test. Boxing-day is actually a word made from ‘Christmas box’ (Christmas gift). Most countries have a holiday the next day after Christmas. It is also custom to gift Christmas box on this day.
