The 67th Grammy Awards nominations have stirred up disappointment among BTS and BLACKPINK fans, who took to social media to voice their anger over the lack of recognition for K-pop stars. Despite years of breaking records and making global waves, no K-pop artists were nominated this year, leaving many fans questioning the Grammys’ commitment to diversity and fairness.

Fans of BTS, known as the ARMY, and BLACKPINK, called BLINKs, are leading the outcry. BTS, comprising members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook, had several solo releases this year, including Jung Kook’s album Golden and RM’s Right Place, Wrong Person. BLACKPINK’s Lisa (aka Lalisa Manobal), also made headlines with her chart-topping solo hits “Rockstar” and “New Woman.” Despite their successes, neither group nor their members received Grammy nods, leaving fans feeling that the Recording Academy is out of touch with the popularity and influence of K-pop.

On social media, ARMYs expressed frustration, with one fan tweeting, “BTS doesn’t need the Grammys, the Grammys need BTS!” Another noted, “How do Grammy voters pick nominees? It feels like the same artists get recycled each year, ignoring groundbreaking acts like BTS.” A third user said, “If the Grammys really do have ‘Asian Grammy’ all Asian artists should just boycott it. Like the Oscars, Asians are only allowed to win or get any kind of recognition when it’s beneficial to the Academy or those overwhelming, undeniable successes: Ang Lee, Bong Joon-Ho, BTS.”

BLACKPINK fans echoed the sentiment, particularly calling out Lisa’s absence from the Best New Artist category. “Lisa deserved Best New Artist at least. It’s clear the Grammys don’t prioritise Asian artists,” one BLINK wrote.

This isn’t the first time K-pop fans have voiced frustration with the Grammys. BTS, who became the first K-pop group to be nominated in 2021, is yet to secure a Grammy win despite smashing records and achieving worldwide acclaim. Many K-pop supporters believe that the Grammys are reluctant to acknowledge non-Western artists, especially from Asia, despite the genre’s huge international fanbase.

The exclusion feels particularly surprising given the Grammys’ increased emphasis on inclusivity in recent years.
