You must have seen, read and heard about the recent film ‘Pushpa’. The game of smuggling forest wood and the efforts of forest officials is shown a lot in it. But the way IPS officers are shown taking action against Pushparaj in the film, in reality this is not the case. IFS is the first job to stop smuggling, today we are telling about this job.
An IFS has to fulfill both the responsibilities from office planning to field duty for the conservation and promotion of forest and wildlife.
Candidates from all over the country participate in the examination of IFS, one of the All India level services. Let us know about the various aspects of this exam-
One of the all India level services, IFS was started in 1966 keeping in mind the conservation of Indian Forest. The exam is usually held at the same time as the Civil Services exam which is likely in June 2022. For this the competitive examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission i.e. UPSC.
Accordingly, IFS is deployed in different states. The way the threat of forest areas and wildlife has increased across the country, it is no wonder that the numbers will increase in the coming years.
Qualification & Age Limit
For IFS exam, a candidate must be a graduate (Science stream) with one of the science subjects. As far as age limit is concerned, candidates between 21 years to 32 years (general category) can take this exam.
The exam is completed in three phases
There are three phases of IFS exam. Starting with the written test, it ends with the interview, physical and medical test. The pattern of the question paper is similar to that of other Union Public Service Commission exams.
The preliminary exam is multiple choice. After qualifying in it there is a written test. The written examination consists of seven papers from General Knowledge and English as a compulsory subject, besides four papers from two optional subjects. Any other two subjects can be taken as an optional subject. The questions are often focused on current affairs.
The second door for successful candidates in the written examination is the interview. Every aspect related to his personality and academic abilities is thoroughly investigated in front of a panel of departmental high officials.
Physical exam and training
Completing 26 kms by running or walking in four hours sets this exam apart from all other exams. The test of height, chest measurement, weight etc. is similar to other examinations, with different standards for women and candidates belonging to hilly region. There is a medical test of the candidate immediately after running or walking.
The training period of IFS is maximum three years as compared to other services. This training is given at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun. During this trainee IFS has to pass about 42 papers. Trainees IFS have to undergo training in the final year while serving in the offices of the department.
