Sri Lanka won the first match of Group B in the Asia Cup. The hosts beat Bangladesh by 5 wickets at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium in Kandy. Bangladesh’s wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim got life in the 31st over. Mathish Pathirana bowled the second ball of the over short of length outside the off stump. Mushfiqur cuts it but the ball goes backward. The bowler and some fielders appealed for caught out, but the umpire gave the decision of not out.

The Sri Lankan team had no reviews left, so they could not demand a replay. It was seen in the replays that the ball hit the bat of Mushfiqur and went into the hands of the wicketkeeper.

3. Pathirana celebrates like Ronaldo
Sri Lankan fast bowler Mathish Pathirana celebrated like footballer Cristiano Ronaldo after taking a wicket. Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim could not make much use of the lifeline he got in the 31st over. He was batting on 12 at the time of the bad decision by the umpire. He was caught out at third man position in the 33rd over after 2 overs by Pathirana. He scored 13 runs.

4. Mehdi Hasan, who was run out in confusion, was left standing at the same end with Shanto
Bangladesh’s right handed batsman Mehdi Hasan Miraj was run out in confusion. Kasun Rajitha bowled the third ball of the 37th over short of good length. Mehdi Hasan plays the shot towards square leg. Meanwhile, fellow player Najmul Hussain Shanto reached Mehdi’s crease while running, but Mehdi remained standing at his end. Both the batters reached the same end. The fielder picked up the ball and threw it, the bowler also dropped the bails before the batter returned.

Shanto was batting on 76 at the time of this confusion. Mehdi Hasan did not go inside the crease to save the set batsman and sacrificed his wicket.

impact: Bangladesh’s score was 141 runs at the time of Mehidy Hasan’s wicket. Shanto added 13 more runs to his score and took the team’s score beyond 160.

5. Mendis misses a simple stumping
Kusal Mendis missed a simple stumping after taking a diving catch in the 11th over. The first ball of the 40th over, Mahish Teekshana bowled a fuller length ball outside the off stump. Sheikh Mehdi Hasan went ahead and missed the ball while playing the shot. The ball did not hit Kusal Mendis properly and he missed the stumping. Meanwhile, Mehdi Hasan is back in the crease.

Batsman Tanjid Hasan made his ODI debut for Bangladesh. The 22-year-old left-handed batsman Tanjid played the first match of his ODI career against Sri Lanka. But he could not even open his account, he was made LBW by Mahish Teekshana.
