Security camera footage from the exact moment when two terrorists carried out a bomb attack near the parliament building in Turkey’s Ankara on Sunday surfaced on social media. The attack left two police personnel injured while no casualties have been reported.
The CCTV footage, which is now viral on micro-blogging platform X, shows two unidentified men parking what appears to be an SUV in front of the entrance gate of the General Directorate of Security of the Ministry of the Interior and one of the men blows himself up as he runs towards the building.
This followed a powerful explosion resulting in large flames, which was heard for several kilometres from the site of the attack.
Ankara Terrorist Attack
The Turkish government in its statement said two attackers arrived in a commercial vehicle around 9:30 am (0630 GMT) “in front of the entrance gate of the General Directorate of Security of our Ministry of the Interior, and carried out a bomb attack.” The Turkish government has termed it a ‘terrorist attack.’
“One of the terrorists blew himself up and the other was neutralised,” the ministry said on social media, saying two officers received “minor injuries”.
Notably, the district, which was targeted by the attackers holds great political significance as it is not only home to several ministries but also the base of the Turkish parliament.
Turkish President on Ankara Terrorist Attack
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that “terrorists” will never achieve their aims, hours after a blast near the parliament in Ankara injured two police officers.
“The villains who threaten the peace and security of citizens have not achieved their objectives and will never achieve them,” Erdogan told the parliament.
Meanwhile, the Ankara police headquarters said on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that it was carrying out “controlled explosions” of “suspicious packages” to prevent other explosions.
The Ankara prosecutor’s office said it was opening an investigation and banned access to the area. Local media was asked to stop broadcasting images from the scene of the attack.
Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.
