Joint Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has written a letter to the chief secretaries of all the states and union territories requesting to make sure that no licenses or permissions are granted for the sale, breeding, and keeping of pit bulls and other breeds

In response to a writ petition filed in the Delhi High Court by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying OP Chaudhary has written a letter to the chief secretaries of all the states and union territories requesting that the Department of Animal Husbandry, the local body, make sure that no licenses or permissions are granted for the sale, breeding, and keeping of pit bulls and other breeds that are intentionally bred for aggression and are frequently used for illegal fighting and attacks.

The expert committee headed by the commissioner of animal husbandry has also suggested that the importation of certain dog breeds be outlawed, reported news agency, ANI.

Breeds such as pit bull terriers, other terrier breeds of that kind, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasilerio, Dogo Argentino, American bulldog, Boerboel, Kangal, different shepherd dogs, Tornjak, Bandog, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa, Akita, Mastiffs, Rottweilers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, wolf dogs, Canario, Akbash, and Moscow Guarddog are among the dogs the committee has recommended be banned. This restriction would also apply to mixed and crossbred dog breeds.

PETA India applauded the Center for taking this action to protect children and senior citizens who are injured or killed by certain breeds of dogs that are manipulated and trained to view other living things as โ€˜preyโ€™, as well as vulnerable dog breeds that are frequently used by criminal elements of society for illegal dogfighting.

Lately, twenty people were injured after being attacked by a stray dog in Ghumarwin area, an official said. Municipal Council Ghumarwin President Rita Sehgal said the dog would suddenly pounce on the people passing by and bite them.

The incident occurred when a stray dog bit several people within the span of a few hours near Gandhi Chowk in the Ghumarwin market. The injured were sent for treatment at a local hospital and have been administered anti-rabies vaccines, Sehgal added. However, this is not an isolated incident.
