Pinky Cole, a 35-year-old CEO of a US-based vegan burger chain, said that she doesn’t remember anything that she learned in college.

Education provides a foundation for meeting the right people, gaining industry insights, and preparing for challenges in the business world. The more educated you are, the better equipped you become to seize opportunities and navigate obstacles in running a small business. Despite this conventional wisdom, Pinky Cole, a 35-year-old CEO of a $100 million vegan burger company in the United States, confesses that she has forgotten everything she studied in college. Nonetheless, she emphasises that the relationships forged during her undergraduate years played a crucial role in the establishment and success of her company.

Pinky Cole finished with a bachelor’s degree in mass media from Clark Atlanta University in 2009, but the coursework did not aid her in her day job. The owner of Slutty Vegan— which has 11 outlets around the US, told CNBC, “I’m going to be totally transparent with you. When I went to college, all the stuff that I learned, I don’t remember (any) of it. What I do remember is the relationships that I built along the way.”

Pinky Cole’s college mate, Delta Sigma Theta, played a pivotal role in shaping her leadership skills and professionalism. He taught her leadership skills and professionalism and provided her with ties with individuals she “still connects with to this day.” She also mentioned that she looks for new relationships with old students she meets at events and business engagements since “we’ve already built a rapport.”

Pinky Cole emphasises that her college peers have risen to become executives and CEOs of major companies. The strong bonds formed during this time have continued into their professional lives. Cole further went on to say that her college experience was priceless because of the connections she formed.

When Cole was asked for a piece of advice to budding entrepreneurs, she said, “You should go to college or school because the relationships, if nothing else, will be the thing that will support and carry you on your career journey.”

As per Fast Company, the plant-based cuisine startup Slutty Vegan was established in 2018 by Pinky Cole, a former NBC television producer. Once a mere ghost kitchen, it quickly gained momentum thanks to social media and word-of-mouth. It expanded into a food truck, then a brick-and-mortar restaurant, and today it has 11 locations throughout Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and New York.
