“Is this the future of retail?” This question might cross your mind after you watch a video reportedly filmed at a mall in China. The now-viral video features models who have replaced mannequins, walking on treadmills instead of runways, likely to demonstrate “how clothes fit and move” on a person.

In the video, models can be seen all dressed up walking on treadmills outside the designer clothing store ITIB. While many were in awe of the innovative idea, others found it somewhat unsettling. News18.com cannot independently verfiy when or where the video was recorded.

“A Chinese retail chain has swapped traditional mannequins for real women walking on treadmills, wearing their clothes. They believe this helps customers see how the garments fit and move on a person,” reads the caption to the video shared on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Not a bad hustle if you’re looking for some extra cash…and it keeps you fit too! Get paid to walk and show off the latest styles!” posted an individual after watch the video.

Another added, “In the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s department stores like Bloomingdales had employees walk around displaying clothing for sale so clients could see different styles and know what the clothing looked like on a person.”

“Movement is more eye-catching from a marketing/human attention perspective. Clever,” expressed a third.

A fourth shared, “I find this a bit questionable. I hope they get paid well for it!”

“What happens when they trip? No guardrail or nothing, falling from a raised platform. Oh you know I’m getting old when I see this and just think of safety,” said a fifth.

A sixth chimed in, “Just when you thought YOU had the worlds worst job,” while another added, “Imagine an 8-hour shift of this.”

In July this year, a video of a model posing as “live mannequin” at the Manto Bride store in Dubai Festival City Mall went viral on social media. Angelina, who shared the video on Instagram, can be seen standing on a platform typically reserved for mannequins. Dressed in the brand’s bodycon short dress and stiletto heels, with her hair styled in a sleek ponytail, Angelina changes her poses throughout the video. The text on the video read, “POV: marketing in Dubai.”
