1. Instagram banned in Turkey: On August 2, Turkey banned the social media platform Instagram. The country’s information technology regulator announced the ban, but did not give a reason or duration for it.
Turkiye imposed the ban following comments made by communications officer Fahrettin Altun.
- Altun had called for blocking condolence messages on Instagram over the killing of Hamas chief Asmail Haniyeh.
- Earlier, from 2007-2010, video sharing platform YouTube was also banned in Turkey.
- Instagram was started in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger.
- In 2012, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg bought Instagram for $1 billion.
- Instagram’s market value in 2024 is approximately $500 billion.
2. Janet Yang re-elected as AMPAS President: On August 2, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) re-elected Janet Yang as president. She became the president of the film academy for the first time in 2022.
Janet Yang was born on July 13, 1956 in New York, United States.

3. John Abraham buys racing team at Indian Racing Festival: On August 2, John Abraham became the owner of the Goa Aces Racing Team. John’s racing team will participate in the motorsport event Indian Racing Festival 2024.
The Indian Racing Festival 2024 will be organised by Racing Promotions Private Limited (RPPL).
- The Indian Racing Festival will be held from August 24 to November 17.
- This race will include teams from Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Kochi, Ahmedabad and Kolkata.
- A groundbreaking night race will also be held on the Chennai street circuit.

4. India gives two ports to Maldives:On August 1, the central government has announced to give two additional ports to Maldives. Now Maldives will be able to use Kandla Sea (INIXY1) and Visakhapatnam Sea Port (INYTZ1) for goods export.
- Kandla and Visakhapatnam customs sea ports will be used for export of important goods.
- Kandla Port is located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, India.
- Kandla is the largest port in the country, the responsibility of which lies with the Kandla Port Trust.
- This port is connected to the whole world for import-export.
- Visakhapatnam is the only major port of Andhra Pradesh.
- It is the third largest port in the country and the largest port on the east coast.
