1. PM Modi inaugurates 32nd ICAE: On August 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 32nd edition of the International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE). The event was held at the National Agricultural Science Centre (NASC) in New Delhi.

2. SBI’s profit in Q1FY25 stood at ₹17,035 crore: On August 3, State Bank of India (SBI) released the results for Q1FY25 i.e. the first quarter of the financial year 2024-25. SBI’s standalone net profit in the April-June quarter increased by 1% year-on-year to ₹ 17,035.16 crore.

  • It stood at ₹16,884 crore in Q1FY24.
  • The bank’s net profit has also fallen by 17.69% on quarterly basis.
  • The bank’s profit in the previous quarter (Q4FY24) was Rs 20,698 crore.
  • In the June quarter, the bank’s total income increased by 13.55% year-on-year to Rs 1,22,687 crore.
  • This was Rs 1,08,038 crore in the same quarter last year.
  • SBI’s net interest income (NII) grew 5.71% year-on-year to Rs 41,125 crore in the June quarter.
  • The results of companies come in standalone and consolidated parts.
  • Standalone shows the financial performance of only one unit.
  • Consolidated financial reports provide reports on the entire company.

3. VPS Kaushik became Adjutant General: On August 2, Veeresh Pratap Singh Kaushik took over as the Adjutant General of the Indian Army. Prior to this, he was serving as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Trishakti Corps.

  • Kaushik was commissioned into 3 Kumaon (Rifles) in June 1988.

  • He is the senior administrative officer of the Army or Air Force who reports to the Chief of Army Staff.
  • He is also the Colonel of the Corps of Military Police and the Judge Advocate General.

4. Central government removed BSF Chief and Deputy Chief from their posts: On August 2, the Central Government removed Border Security Force (BSF) Director General (DG) Nitin Agarwal and Deputy Special Director General Yogesh Bahadur Khurania from their posts.

  • Both the officers were asked to report to their respective home cadres (Nitin Agarwal to Kerala and Khurania to Odisha).
  • SSB DG Daljit Singh Chaudhary has been given additional charge of BSF DG.
  • Nitin Agarwal is a 1989 batch IPS officer of Kerala cadre.
  • He is the first DG of BSF who had to leave his tenure midway.
  • Aggarwal would have assumed office in June 2023 and his term would end in 2026.

5. Shubhanshu Shukla selected as Prime Astronaut for ISS: On August 2, India selected its prime astronaut for the Indo-US Space Mission. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) announced Shubhanshu Shukla as the prime astronaut for this mission.

Shubhanshu was born on 10 October 1985 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

  • Captain Prashant Nair was selected as backup for this mission.
  • Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) has signed a Space Flight Agreement (SFA) with US-based Axiom Space for the Axiom-4 mission.
  • Both Group Captain Shubhanshu and Group Captain Prashant will be trained for the mission in the US from the first week of August.
  • During the space mission, the selected astronauts will conduct scientific research and test technologies and will also participate in outreach activities in space.
  • 38-year-old Shubhanshu is a fighter pilot and combat leader.
  • Shubhanshu has more than 2000 hours of flying experience.
  • Till now he has flown aircraft like Sukhoi-30MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier and AN-32.
  • Shubhanshu is also an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA).
  • He was commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on 17 June 2006.
