1. Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh: After the anti-reservation movement in Bangladesh turned violent, PM Sheikh Hasina has resigned on Monday, 5 August. Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman confirmed this.
Hasina has reached India by military helicopter and her sister Rehana is also with her.
- Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman said that now the army will form the interim government.
- So far, around 300 people, including 14 policemen, have lost their lives in the violence that broke out between protesters and supporters of the ruling party.
- Thousands of people have been injured in the violence.
- An indefinite curfew has been imposed across Bangladesh.

2. Ujjain has been registered in the Guinness Book for the highest number of people playing Damru: A world record was made in Ujjain on the third Monday of Sawan, 5 August. 1500 people played Damru together for 10 minutes on Shakti Path near Mahakal Lok. With this, Ujjain’s name was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest number of people playing Damru.
Rishinath from Guinness Book handed over its certificate to MP Anil Ferozia, MLA Satish Malviya and saints.
- Earlier, the record of 488 people playing Damru simultaneously was registered in the name of Federation of New York in 2021.
- For this, practice was going on in two sessions for the last three days.
- Today, separate groups of 25-25 Damru players were formed.
- This 15-minute long grand event was organised on the banks of Shipra river to the tune of 1500 Damru and Bhasma Aarti.
- Guinness World Records is a reference book published annually that compiles world records.
- Till the year 2000 it was known as ‘Guinness Book of Records’.
- This book has created a record as the ‘best selling copyright book’.

3. Novak Djokovic became the 5th Golden Slam winner: Serbian legend Novak Djokovic completed the Golden Slam of tennis on Sunday, 4 August. In tennis, the person who wins all four Grand Slams and Olympic Gold is considered a Golden Slam winner. Djokovic became the fifth player to do so. Before him, only Spain’s Rafael Nadal, America’s Serena Williams, America’s Andre Agassi and Germany’s Steffi Graf have won the career Grand Slam.
Djokovic defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 7-6 in the men’s singles final match at the Paris Olympics.
- This is the first Olympic gold of Djokovic’s career.
- Djokovic won both sets in tie-breaker rounds.
- The men’s singles gold medal match was played at the Roland Garros court in Paris.
- Djokovic has previously won 24 Grand Slams and won his first Grand Slam in 2008.
- There are 4 Grand Slams in tennis – these include the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.
- Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the Wimbledon final just last month.

4. Daljit Singh Chaudhary appointed as new Director General of BSF: Senior IPS officer of UP cadre, Daljit Singh Chaudhary, has been appointed as the new Director General of BSF on August 3. Daljit was given additional charge of DG a day after the current Director General Nitin Agarwal was removed.
IPS Daljit is currently holding the responsibility of the post of Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
- Daljeet Chaudhary has handled many important responsibilities so far during his tenure.
- He has also served as Acting DG of NSG.
- He has been given additional charge of this post till the appointment of a regular officer or till further orders.
- Daljit Singh Choudhary is a 1990 batch UP cadre IPS officer.
- He was born on 25 November 1965 in Delhi.
- He has been awarded the President’s Medal three times so far.
- He will retire on November 30, 2025.
- In view of the bravery of Daljit Chaudhary, he was made ADG Law and Order i.e. Additional Director General of Police Law and Order in the Akhilesh government of Samajwadi Party.
- On Friday night, 2 August, the Home Ministry removed BSF DG General Nitin Agarwal from his post.
- Nitin Agarwal has been sent back to his parent cadre Kerala.

5. Bharatanatyam artist Yamini Krishnamurthy passed away: Bharatnatyam artist Yamini Krishnamurthy has passed away. Yamini breathed her last at the age of 84 in Apollo Hospital, Delhi. Apart from Bharatnatyam, she was also an expert in Kuchipudi dance form.
Yamini Krishnamurthy was the queen of the dancing world. She had won many awards in traditional dancing such as Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi.
- Born in Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh, Yamini Krishnamurthy was raised in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu.
- Yamini was born on 20 December 1940 in Madanapalle, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh.
- While Yamini grew up in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu.
- In the year 1957, when Yamini was just 17 years old, she made her debut in Bharatnatyam.
- She was known as the ‘torch bearer’ of the Kuchipudi dance style.
- He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1968, Padma Bhushan in 2001, and Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
- She ran a dancing institute named Yamini School of Dance in Delhi.
6. Former England batsman Graham Thorpe passed away: Former England batsman Graham Thorpe passed away today i.e. on 5 August. He was 55 years old. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) gave this information.
Graham Thorpe played international cricket for England from 1993 to 2005.
- Graham Thorpe played 100 Tests and 82 ODIs in his career.
- Graham Thorpe scored 6744 Test runs in 100 Test matches at an average of 44.66, including 16 centuries and 39 half-centuries.
- Thorpe scored 2380 runs in 82 One Day Internationals for England at an average of 37.18.
- Thorpe scored 21 half-centuries in ODIs.
- The batsman played county cricket for Surrey and scored nearly 20,000 runs for the team.
- Thorpe also served as the batting coach of the English team.
- In 2022, Thorpe was appointed head coach of the Afghanistan team, although he fell seriously ill shortly afterwards.
