1. IAS Manoj Kumar Singh new Chief Secretary in Uttar Pradesh Government:
A new Chief Secretary has been appointed in the Uttar Pradesh government. IAS Manoj Kumar Singh has been given the charge of Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, June 30. He will also hold the post of Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner (IIDC) and CEO UPDA.

  • Till now he had the responsibility of many important departments like IIDC, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Additional Chief Secretary Panchayati Raj, CEO UPDA.

2. Nikunja Bihari Dhal appointed Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister of Odisha: IAS officer Nikunja Bihari Dhal has been appointed as the Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister of Odisha. Dhal is currently serving as the Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha.

  • Nikunja Bihari Dhal, Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha and Additional Chief Secretary, Home (Elections) Department, has been appointed as Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister of Odisha, the order said.
  • Dhal will replace IAS officer Surendra Kumar.
  • Earlier in the day, Manoj Ahuja took over as Odisha Chief Secretary, replacing Pradeep Kumar Jena.

3. Ravi Agarwal becomes the new Chairman of CBDT: On June 30, the Central Government appointed 1988 batch IRS officer Ravi Agarwal as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He will replace Nitin Gupta, whose term ended on June 30.

  • Ravi was to retire in September this year, but now he will remain in his post till June 30 next year.
  • CBDT is the apex policy maker of the Income Tax Department.
  • CBDT can have six members besides a chairman.
  • The other serving members on the board are Pragya Sahay Saxena, HBS Gill, Praveen Kumar Sanjay Kumar and Sanjay Kumar Verma.
  • Nitin Gupta was appointed as the Chairman of CBDT in June 2022.
  • Nitin was to retire in September last year but was given a nine-month extension till June.
  • Ravi Agarwal will head the CBDT till June 2025, an order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) said.
  • The full name of CBDT is Central Board of Direct Taxes.
  • It is a government agency responsible for enforcing direct tax laws in India.

4. Challa Srinivasulu Setty will become the new chairman of SBI: The Financial Services Institution Bureau (FSIB) has recommended Challa Srinivasulu Shetty as the next chairman of the State Bank of India (SBI). The FSIB, which comes under the central government, said on Saturday, June 29, that keeping in view the existing parameters and experience, the bureau recommends Challa Srinivasulu Shetty for the chairman of SBI.

  • He currently oversees the International Banking, Global Markets and Technology departments.
  • The bank’s current chairman Dinesh Khara is retiring on August 28 after turning 63.
  • 63 years is the upper age limit for SBI Chairman post.
  • The FSIB has the responsibility for appointing senior executives in public sector financial institutions.
  • Following the recommendation of the FSIB, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister takes the final decision.
  • The chairman of FSIB is Bhanu Pratap Sharma, former secretary, Department of Personnel and Training.
  • State Bank of India is the largest government bank in the country.
  • The government has 56.92% stake in SBI.
  • SBI was established on 1 July 1955 and is headquartered in Mumbai.

5. 3 new criminal laws were implemented:
3 new criminal laws have come into force from July 1. On December 21, 2023, the Parliament of India passed three new criminal laws to replace the existing criminal laws. It was approved by President Draupadi Murmu on December 25. Now these laws have been implemented across the country from July 1, 2024.

The Indian Penal Code (IPC) enacted in 1860 has now been replaced by the Indian Judicial Code (BNS) 2023.

  • In the BNS Act, 22 provisions of the IPC have been repealed and 175 have been amended.
  • Along with this, 8 new sections have been added to the law.

  • At the same time, the Indian Civil Defense Code 2023 has now been implemented in place of CrPC made in 1898.
  • Through the Indian Civil Defence Code, 9 provisions of CrPC have been repealed, 160 provisions have been amended and 9 new provisions have been made.
  • The Indian Civil Defence Code now has a total of 533 sections.
  • Apart from this, the Indian Evidence Code 2023 has now been implemented in place of the Indian Evidence Code made in 1872.
  • Indian Evidence Act 2023 5 provisions of the existing Indian Evidence Code have been repealed. A new provision has also been included along with changes in 23 provisions.
  • Now there are a total of 170 sections in the law.

7. India participated in the UN meeting on Afghanistan:
A meeting of the United Nations (UN) was held on Afghanistan on Sunday, June 30 in Doha, the capital of Qatar. 25 countries including India participated in it. This is the first time that Taliban leaders were present during the discussion on Afghanistan.

  • Before this, he had been boycotting every UN meeting in which Afghanistan was discussed.

  • These organizations demand that as long as the Taliban continues to violate the rights of women, they should neither be talked to nor recognized.
