1. Prem Singh Tamang became the Chief Minister of Sikkim: On June 10, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) leader Prem Singh Tamang took oath as the Chief Minister of Sikkim. State Governor Laxman Acharya administered the oath to him and cabinet ministers at the Pawjor Stadium in the capital Gangtok.

  • Prem Singh Tamang has been winning the Sikkim Assembly elections for five consecutive times since 1994.
  • He served as a minister in the Sikkim Democratic Fund (SDF) government until 2009.

  • SKM had won 31 out of 32 seats in the state.
  • The opposition SDF got only one seat.

2. Narendra Modi became PM for the third consecutive time: On June 9, President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India for the third time in New Delhi. Along with PM Modi, 71 MPs also took oath as ministers.

3. Pooja Tomar became UFC champion: On June 8, India’s Pooja Tomar became the first Indian fighter to win the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In the US, Pooja defeated Brazil’s Rayano dos Santos in her debut fight.

4. Carlos Alcaraz wins French Open: On June 9, Spanish star tennis player Carlos Alcaraz won the men’s singles title at the French Open 2024. Alcaraz defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

5. Sub-Lieutenant Anamika becomes first woman helicopter pilot: On June 8, a passing out parade was held at INS Rajali in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu. In this, Sub Lieutenant Anamika B Rajeev was awarded the graduation degree of helicopter pilot.

  • Rajesh Pendhakar awarded ‘Golden Wings’ to 24 officers of Basic Helicopter Conversion Course (BHCC).

  • Anamika will get permission to fly helicopters like Sea Kings, AHL Dhruv, Chetak and MH-60R Seahawks.
  • These pilots received their degrees after 22 weeks of training in the Naval Air Squadron.

6. Israel extended the ban on Al Jazeera: On 9 June, Israel extended the ban on Qatar’s media house Al Jazeera for 45 days. The Israeli government had banned Al Jazeera on 5 May due to displeasure with its reporting on the Hamas war.

  • Israel’s Communications Ministry said Al Jazeera’s telecasting and websites would remain banned on cable and satellite companies.
  • The Israeli government’s cabinet cited threats from Al Jazeera’s telecasting.
  • Israel had accused Al Jazeera of being a mouthpiece of Qatar.
  • Israeli police raided the office of Al Jazeera and confiscated many items, including cameras.
  • Al Jazeera was launched on 15 November 2006, with its headquarters in Doha, Qatar.
