1. The Central Government reorganized NITI Aayog: The central government has reorganized the NITI Aayog on July 16. Senior ministers of the alliance parties i.e. NDA have also got a place in it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chairman of NITI Aayog while Suman K Berry will be the vice-chairman of NITI Aayog. Dr. VK Saraswat, Professor Ramesh Chandra, Dr. VK Paul and Arvind Virmani have been made full-time members.
This time Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has been made an ex-officio member. Last time Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar was among the ex-officio members.
- The ex-officio members of NITI Aayog include Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
- Apart from these, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Health Minister JP Nadda, Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy, MSME Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, Panchayati Raj Minister Lallan Singh, Social Justice Minister Virendra Kumar, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, Women and Child Welfare Minister Annapurna Devi, Food Processing Minister Chirag Paswan and Minister of State with Independent Charge Rao Indrajit Singh have been appointed as special invitee members.
- Last time Piyush Goyal and Ashwini Vaishnav were also special invitees. But this time both of them have not been included.
- On January 1, 2015, the Planning Commission was replaced by a new institution, NITI Aayog.
- It was established with the vision of minimum government, maximum governance.
- The full name of NITI Aayog is National Institution for Transforming India.
- It serves as the apex public policy think tank of the Government of India.
- Its works include “15-Year Road Map”, “7-Year Vision, Strategy and Action Plan”, AMRUT, Digital India, Atal Innovation Mission, Medical Education Reforms, Agriculture Reforms.
- The first meeting of NITI Aayog was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 8, 2015.

2. Subhash Dandekar, founder of stationery brand Camelin, passes away: Subhash Dandekar, founder of iconic stationery brand Camlin, passed away. He was 86. He was serving as the honorary chairman of Kokuyo Camlin after selling his brand to Japanese company Kokuyo.
Subhash Dandekar’s name was one of the big names in Marathi Industries.
- People used to call Subhash Dandekar by the name of Dadasaheb Digambar Dandekar.
- Camlin was founded in 1931 by two brothers DP Dandekar and GP Dandekar.
- The company was then known as Dandekar & Company.
- The company was recognised as a private company in the year 1946.
- In the year 1998, it was converted into a public limited company.
- In 1960, under the leadership of Subhash Dandekar, the company started manufacturing art materials besides stationery products and its name was changed to Camlin.
- In 1988, the company was renamed Camlin Limited.
- In 2011, Kokuyo Company, a leading Japanese stationery manufacturer, bought more than 50% stake in Camlin. This deal marked the entry of Kokuyo products in India.
- At the same time, Camlin expanded to other countries.

3. Child vaccination rates in India in 2023 will be lower than in 2022: According to the WHO-UNICEF report released on July 16, the rate of vaccination of children in India in the year 2023 was lower than in 2022. In the year 2020, there was a sharp decline in vaccination rates due to the Kovid 19 epidemic. Its effect was also seen in 2021. But, in 2022, there was an improvement in the vaccination rates.
India is among the countries with the highest number of children receiving zero dosage.
- A report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF shows that India had improved its vaccination rates in the year 2022 for almost all vaccines after the Covid pandemic.
- However, vaccination rates have decreased in the year 2023.
- India is among the countries with the highest number of children receiving zero doses against two diseases.
- India has the second highest number of children who will not receive any vaccination in the year 2023.
- Nearly 16 lakh children in India have not received zero dose.
- This is second only to Nigeria, where 2.1 million children were not vaccinated.
- In 2022, India recorded the highest number of zero-dose children globally at 27.3 lakh.
- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 11 December 1946.
- It is called United Nations Children’s Fund in Hindi.
- It was formerly called the United Nations International Children’s Fund.
- Polish doctor Ludwik Rauschman played a major role in the formation of UNICEF.
- UNICEF received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965, the Indira Gandhi Peace Prize in 1989 and the Prince of Asturias Award in 2006.

CSIR chief Kalaiselvi gets two-year extension: Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Director General Nallathambi Kalaiselvi got a two-year extension on Tuesday, July 17. She was appointed to the post in August 2022.
Kalaiselvi is the first woman Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
- Kalaiselvi was made the Director General of CSIR after the retirement of Shekhar Mande.
- Kalaiselvi has held senior positions in CSIR.
- In February 2019, she was the first woman scientist to head the Central Electrochemical Research Institute i.e. CSIR-CECRI.
- She hails from Ambasamudram, a small town in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
- His research interests include lithium and beyond, lithium batteries, supercapacitors, and waste-derived electrodes and electrolytes for energy storage and electrocatalytic applications.
- She is currently working on the development of viable sodium-ion/lithium-sulfur batteries and supercapacitors.
- Kalaiselvi has also made significant contributions to the National Mission for Electric Mobility. He has over 125 research papers and six patents to his credit.
- The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is India’s largest research and development organisation.
- CSIR is an all-India institute comprising an active network of 37 national laboratories, 39 outlying centres, 3 innovation complexes and 5 units.
- It was established in September 1942 and headquartered in New Delhi.

Paul Kagame elected for the fourth time as President of Rwanda: On July 16, Paul Kagame was elected as the President of Rwanda for the fourth time. According to the National Election Commission of Rwanda, President Paul Kagame has won the country’s presidential election for the fourth time by securing 99 percent of the votes. By late evening on July 15, 2024, 79 percent of the votes had been counted.
The final official result of the 2024 presidential election is expected to be declared on or before July 27.
- Earlier, in the last presidential election held in 2017, Paul Kagame had also won with 99 percent votes.
