The Election Commission has written a letter to Centre and state governments about security of polling officials, including chief electoral officers, who are targetted after the elections are over. EC has asked the government to ensure adequate security, so that its officials can perform their duty in a fair manner. In its letter addressed to the Cabinet secretary, chief secretaries of states and Union Territories, secretary to the Govt of India, Department of Personnel and Training and chief electoral officers of all states and UTs, the EC has said that state/UT governments shall invariably obtain prior approval of the Commission if any disciplinary action is initiated against the chief electoral officers and other officers up to joint chief electoral officer during their tenure and also up to one year from the expiry of last election conducted by them.
