By defeating Namibia on Sunday night at 3:30, England kept alive the hopes of reaching the Super-8 of the T20 World Cup. Now the defending champion England is completely dependent on the Australia-Scotland match, here England will go to the next round only if Australia wins. If Scotland wins then England will be out.
After 34 out of 40 matches of the group stage have been completed, 6 teams of Super-8 have been decided. USA and Afghanistan have made it to the Super-8 round for the first time. 2 teams of the next round are yet to be decided, one team will qualify from Group-B and the other from Group-D. How England’s hopes rest on Australia
Group-B match was played between England and Namibia on Saturday-Sunday night. Due to rain, England won the match of 10-10 overs by 41 runs by DLS method. With this, England has 5 points from 2 wins, 1 loss and 1 inconclusive match in 4 matches. Scotland also has only 5 points in 3 matches, but England’s run rate is better than them. Currently, England’s run rate is 3.611 and Scotland’s is 2.164.
If Scotland defeats Australia then the team will reach the Super-8 with 7 points. This will end England’s journey, but if Australia wins then Scotland’s journey will end and England will reach the next round. That is why England’s hopes are now pinned on Australia. Australia has already made it to the Super-8 by winning 3 consecutive matches.
What is the position of the remaining teams in Group-B?
- Australia: After winning 3 matches, they made it to the Super-8 with 6 points. The team will be in Group-1 in the next round, this position will not change even if they lose the last match.
- England: There are 5 points from 2 wins and one draw. The team will reach the Super-8 only if Scotland loses its last match.
- Scotland: There are 5 points from 2 wins and one draw. The team will be able to reach the Super-8 only by defeating Australia or by having the match draw.
- Namibia: The team could reach only 2 points by winning one match, hence it was out of the race for Super-8.
- Oman: Did not win a single match, so the team was out of the race for Super-8.
What is the position of teams in Group-A?
- India: India made it to the Super-8 by winning 3 out of 4 matches. The last match against Canada was inconclusive, so the team has 7 points. Team India will be in Group-1 with Australia in the Super-8.
- America: 2 out of 4 matches were won and one was inconclusive, due to this the team qualified for the Super-8 with 5 points, where the team will be in Group-2. Now any match in the group stage will not affect the position of America.
- Canada: The team got 3 points from one win and one draw. After all the matches were over, the team was out of the race for Super-8.
- Pakistan: There are only 2 points from one win and 2 losses. Even after defeating Ireland in the last match, they will be able to reach only 4 points and hence they are out of the race for Super-8.
- Ireland: Only one point was obtained from a match that was inconclusive. Even after defeating Pakistan in the last match, India will be able to reach only 3 points, which is not enough to qualify for the next round.
What is the position of teams in Group-C?
- Afghanistan: After winning 3 consecutive matches, they made it to the Super-8 with 6 points. The team will be in Group-1 with India. Their last match is still against West Indies, but its result will not affect their Super-8 position.
- West Indies: By winning 3 consecutive matches and getting 6 points, they made it to the Super-8. The team will be in Group-2 with America. Their last match is against Afghanistan. Its result will not change the Super-8 position.
- New Zealand: After losing to Afghanistan and West Indies, the team was out of the race for Super-8. After defeating Uganda in one match, they reached 2 points. Even after winning the last match against Papua New Guinea, the team will be able to reach only 4 points. Which is not enough to reach Super-8.
- Uganda: The team could win only one out of 4 matches and was out of the Super-8 race with just 2 points.
- Papua New Guinea: The team was out of the race for Super-8 after losing 3 matches in a row. The last match is against New Zealand, even after winning it the team will not be able to qualify.
What is the position of teams in Group-D?
- South Africa: After winning all four matches, they made it to the Super-8. The team will be in Group-2 with West Indies.
- Bangladesh: There are 4 points after winning 2 matches. The team will reach the Super-8 by defeating Nepal in the last match, if it loses, the team will have to pray that Netherlands also loses in the last match.
- Netherlands: A win gives 2 points. Defeating Sri Lanka in the last match will give 4 points, to qualify from here we have to pray that Bangladesh loses in the last match. Along with this, the team’s run rate should also be better than Bangladesh.
- Nepal: The team was out of the race for Super-8 after losing 2 matches, one of their matches was also inconclusive. Even after defeating Bangladesh in the last match, the team will be able to reach only 3 points, which is not enough to reach Super-8.
- Sri Lanka: The team was out of the race for Super-8 after losing 2 matches, one of their matches was also inconclusive. Even after defeating Netherlands in the last match, the team will be able to reach only 3 points, which is not enough to reach Super-8.
3 big teams will not play the second round
2009 champions Pakistan, 2014 champions Sri Lanka and 2021 runner-up team New Zealand will not play the second round of the T20 World Cup this time.
- New Zealand The team made it to the knockout stage 3 times in a row in 2016, 2021 and 2022. In 2021, the team lost the final and finished runner-up, while it lost the semi-finals the other 2 times. The team also lost the semi-finals in 2007. The team reached the second round in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014, but now for the first time it was eliminated in the first round.
- Sri Lanka The team won the title in 2014 by defeating India in the final, before which the team was also runner-up in 2012 and 2009. In 2010, the team was eliminated after losing the semi-finals. Apart from this, the team reached the second round in 2007, 2016, 2021 and 2022, but now for the first time it had to end its journey in the first round.
- Pakistan Pakistan won the trophy by defeating Sri Lanka in the final in 2009, the team was runner-up in 2007 and 2022. Pakistan is the only team to reach the knockout stage 6 times out of 8, the team played the final 3 times and was eliminated 3 times after losing the semi-finals. Pakistan team could not cross the second round in 2014 and 2016, but now the team will return to the country after playing the first round after losing to America and India.
2 teams reached Super-8 for the first time
Afghanistan from Group C and USA from Group A have made it to the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup for the first time.
- Afghanistan: The team played the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2010, since then it has been a part of the tournament every time. By 2014, the team was eliminated in the first round and by 2022, it could not cross the second round i.e. the Super-12 stage. Now the team made it to the Super-8 stage for the first time by defeating a strong team like New Zealand in the group stage.
- America: As the co-host of the tournament, the US will play the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2024. The team was in a strong group with India and Pakistan, but defeated Canada and Pakistan to make it to the Super-8. By making it to the Super-8 in its debut World Cup, the US has also secured a ticket to the 2026 T20 World Cup. The top-8 teams of this tournament will directly qualify for the next World Cup.
Super-8 stage will start from June 19
The first round of the T20 World Cup, which started on June 2, i.e. the group stage, will be played till June 18. The last match will be between West Indies and Afghanistan. The Super-8 stage will start from June 19, the first match in Group-2 will be played between America and South Africa. The first match of Group-1 will be on June 20, Afghanistan and India will face each other in Barbados. 12 matches will be played in the Super-8 stage till June 25, both groups will have 6-6 matches.
India will also face Australia in Super-8
Before the tournament started, ICC had decided which team will be in which group in Super-8 so that there is no problem in scheduling. So far 6 teams have made it to the second round, among them India, Australia and Afghanistan are in Group-1. India will face Australia on 24 June.
The fourth team of Group-1 will come from Group-D. Bangladesh and Netherlands are the contenders for this, among them Bangladesh has more chances of qualifying. If this happens then the match between Bangladesh and India will be played on 22 June.
3 teams of Group-2 decided
3 teams of Group-2 have also been decided. USA from Group-A, West Indies from Group-C and South Africa from Group-D made it to the group. The fourth team will come from Group-B. England and Scotland are the contenders for this, among them also England has more chances of qualifying. If this happens then England’s first match will be against the home team West Indies on 20th June from 6 am.
Both semi-finals will be held on June 27
12 matches of the Super-8 stage will be played from 19 to 25 June. The top 2 teams in the points table of Group-1 and Group-2 will make it to the semi-finals. Here the top team of Group-1 will face the second-ranked team in Group-2, similarly the top team of Group-2 will face the second-ranked team in Group-1 in the semi-finals. In simple words, if India is at the first position in Group-1 and England is at the second position in Group-2, then the semi-final will be played between the two on 27 June in Guyana from 8 pm. The first semi-final will also be played on the same day from 6 am. The winning teams of both the semi-finals will play the final in Barbados on 29 June.
