Dharmendra was born on 8 December 1935 in village Dango of Ludhiana. After birth, he started living in a rented house in village Sahnewal with his father Kishan Singh and mother Satwant Kaur. He spent his childhood and youth in the same house.

Dharmendra is praying for the good health of the next generation of the Nambardaar Sweets (Sadhu Halwai) shop where he was a fan of the barfi made in his childhood.

Dharmendra had mentioned in the comedy show that even today he likes the carrot barfi of Sadhu Halwai shop in Sahnewal very much. People who come to meet him from Punjab definitely bring Sadhu Halwai’s barfi with them.

Confectioner and village numberdar Rajeev told that his grandfather Sadhu Singh has been telling that since childhood, Dharmendra has often come to buy barfi from his shop.

It was his job to close and operate the tube wells in all the nearby villages.

Dharmendra’s first marriage was to Prakash Kaur in 1954 at the age of 19. From this marriage he has 2 sons Sunny and Bobby and 2 daughters Vijeta and Ajeeta.

Sunny Deol was born in Sahnewal house. At that time, delivery of pregnant women was done at home instead of hospital. For this reason Sunny Deol was born in this house.

Talent contest made him an actor
People of the village tell that after completing his schooling, Dharmendra had sent his photo for a talent contest and after being selected in it, he came to Mumbai to become an actor. After this he never looked back. Till now Dharmendra has worked in more than 300 films in a career spanning five decades. In 1997, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hindi cinema.
