Thomas Tuchel’s agent, Pina Zahavi has revealed that the manager should have made a move to Manchester United with a agreement ‘was basically done’.
Thomas Tuchel who was recently announced as England’s new permanent manager should have accepted the offer to become Manchester United’s Head Coach after a deal between the two ‘was basically done’.
Tuchel’s agent, Pini Zahavi revealed to the German newspaper Die Welt that the German manager should have taken over the Red Devils as their new permanent manager, in place of Erik ten Hag, who was recently sacked from the job.
“If I were Thomas, I would have gone to Manchester United. He had the opportunity. Everything was prepared, the deal was basically done,” he revealed.
“Thomas has a spark of genius in him but in today’s football, you have to be wise and a diplomat. He will have to learn that,” Zahavi added.
Following the resignation of Gareth Southgate after England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain, Tuchel will take over with his tenure beginning in January 2025. Tuchel has a fairly successful track record having led Chelsea to the UEFA Champions League title in 2021 and also had successful tenures in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and Paris St Germain in France.
His time with Bayern Munich did not go as planned as the German giants ended their 11-year-long league-winning streak after finishing second in the Bundesliga, last season. Following this, he was sacked from the role and Vincent Kompany now holds the position as Munich’s Head Coach.
Reports suggested that Tuchel was Manchester United’s first choice to replace Ten Hag had the Dutchman been sacked in the summer but the delay in his removal saw the Red Devils miss out on their target.
The Manchester side has now appointed Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim as the team’s head coach and he will be replacing interim manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy from November 11, during the international break. Amorim is amongst the best young coaches in the current era and has made a strong case for himself since Sporting Lisbon hammered 4 goals past Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.
The England job will be Tuchel’s first role in international football and it remains to be seen whether he can lift the Three Lions to end their longstanding trophy drought with an all-star squad to call upon.
