Nestled in the sprawling Himalayas on the India-China border, lies a cosy cafe named Komo’s in Zemithang village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district. The cafe, which is run by an all-woman workforce, serves the best coffee in the area along with a breathtaking view.

Komo’s, the first-ever cafe in the remote border village Zemithang, was established under the Central government’s Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) which aims at the comprehensive development of the select villages abutting the northern borders of India. It was established with the help of the Indian Army and is operated by an all-women self-help group.

With the establishment of this cafe, the government aims to boost tourism in the area and help realize the potential of Zemithang as a prime tourist destination.

The Army provided training in baking and associated skills to the women associated with the self-help group. It also equipped the cafe with the required equipment.

This initiative of the Army has won over the hearts of Zemithang residents and is symbolic of the strong bonds and bonhomie that the village shares with the force.

The high spirits of the women running the cafe were on display during the inauguration ceremony. They expressed gratitude to the Indian Army and danced to traditional and modern songs expressing their happiness on embarking on a new journey of entrepreneurship.

The ladies are determined to work for a better future for their children and promise to give them the best possible education.

Residents of Zemithang and the civil administration participated in the ceremony with full enthusiasm.

What Is Government’s Vibrant Village Programme

The programme envisages focused areas of interventions in the select villages for the creation of opportunities for livelihood generation through the promotion of tourism and cultural heritage, skill development and entrepreneurship and development of cooperative societies including agriculture/horticulture, cultivation of medicinal plants/herbs etc.

The interventions also include providing road connectivity to unconnected villages, building housing and village infrastructures, and energy, television and telecom connectivity.

The objective of the programme is to create sufficient incentives for people to stay in the selected villages.
