The upcoming Peaky Blinders film will be helmed by Tom Harper, a name familiar to die-hard fans as he directed several episodes of the original series.

If you thought you’d seen the last of Tommy Shelby, think again. The notorious leader of the Peaky Blinders is sharpening his razor-edged cap once more, and this time, it’s for the big screen. Fans of the sharply dressed gangster from Birmingham have a reason to get excited, as Netflix has given us a sneak peek of Cillian Murphy back in action. With cameras rolling, the long-awaited Peaky Blinders movie is officially in production, and it seems like the Shelby legacy is far from over. Netflix dropped the first look of Murphy fully immersed as the iconic crime boss on Monday, announcing that filming had begun.

Fans were also treated to a behind-the-scenes snapshot of Murphy on set, standing shoulder to shoulder with the series’ creator, Steven Knight.

The upcoming Peaky Blinders film will be helmed by Tom Harper, a name familiar to die-hard fans as he directed several episodes of the original series. The show itself, which first graced our screens in 2013 on BBC Two, quickly became a global phenomenon after Netflix scooped up the rights to stream it in the US. After six thrilling seasons, Peaky Blinders aired its final episode in 2022.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me…It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans,” Murphy said in a statement earlier this year, teasing the return of the beloved character, informs Variety.

Knight, who penned the film’s script, is also co-producing the project alongside Murphy, Caryn Mandabach and Guy Heeley. The executive production team is just as star-studded, with Tom Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren and David Mason all contributing to bringing the story to life on the big screen.

While the rest of the movie’s cast has been kept tightly under wraps, one exciting piece of news emerged last month: Irish actor Barry Keoghan has secured a role in the film. His part remains a mystery for now, but given the world of Peaky Blinders, it’s safe to assume his character will have a significant impact, reports Variety.

Murphy’s return to the Peaky Blinders universe is particularly thrilling, as it follows his monumental Oscar win last year for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The performance not only earned Murphy critical acclaim but also cemented his status as one of the most talented actors of his generation. Now, with his hat tipped once again as Tommy Shelby, Murphy is ready to take us all back to the gritty streets of post-WWI Birmingham.
