2020 and 2021 have been golden years for the gaming community. The country and the world witnessed a massive influx of games, gamers, and developers. Expected to become a $2 billion industry by the year 2023, the gaming industry is observing an astronomic growth in India. Parallelly, India is expected to reach about 510 million gamers by FY 2022. These statistics indicate that consumption of games and gaming content will further accelerate to entertain people. 

COVID pandemic followed by country-wide lockdown and accessibility to affordable internet catalyzed the growth of the gaming sector in the Indian sub-continent. While games and gamers largely entertained people they also made great revenues during the years 2020 and 2021. During the year, many new gaming titles got popular, one made a comeback, and a few upgraded themselves. All of which swiftly propelled the growth of the online gaming community and gaming content.

The average length of gaming video on YouTube is between 30-45 mins, and the gaming audiences enjoy it. However, with leading social media channels like Instagram and YouTube launching ‘reels’ and ‘YT shorts’, many long-format content creators are motivated to experiment with short-format content. A similar trend will be observed in the gamers community wherein gamers would be seen creating ‘speed-running’ videos on YouTube Shorts. Speed-running as a concept has gained immense popularity in the west, now it’s time for India to embrace it. 

New Genres Of Games

Battleground games are one of the widely played games for the last few years. But with the popularity of games like Minecraft, the industry is expected to see an influx of many other genres of games. This will help keep the gaming community-engaged, and further leverage the economy. With developers focusing on creating more women and child-led games the community is expected to grow by many folds.

Livestreaming gaming content has been dear to gamers since they all started their journey on YouTube. Livestream provides gamers an opportunity to interact and play with their audiences, fans, and community. Lately, many brands were seen sponsoring live streams for YouTubers as a part of their influencer marketing campaign. Widely, gamers are known to earn enough revenue from these branded live streams and it is here to stay and grow in the future.

International esports organizations and game development companies are witnessing the exponential growth of the Indian esports market and the opportunity it holds. With affordable smartphones easily available and deep penetration of the internet, India is set to become an esports and gaming hub in the years to come. Acquiring and sponsoring Indian esports teams and companies will be the focus of many Asian and Western esports organizations.
