Mother used to scold him when Lata used to sing
Lata admits that it is because of her father that she is a singer today, because she is the one who taught music. It may surprise to know that Lata’s father Dinanath Mangeshkar did not know for a long time that the daughter could sing. Lata was afraid to sing in front of him. She used to sing and narrate something to the women who came to help in mother’s work in the kitchen. Mother used to scold him that because of the creeper, those women used to spend time, divert attention.
Father’s disciple was taught the right note
Once Chandrakant Gokhale, a disciple of Lata’s father, was doing Riyaz. Dinanath left for some work. Five-year-old Lata was playing there. As soon as the father left, Lata went inside and started telling Gokhale that he was singing wrong. After this, Lata sang Gokhale properly. When the father returned, he asked Lata to sing again. Lata sang and ran away from there. Lata admits ‘I learned by listening to my father’s singing, but I never had enough courage to sing with him.’
Father’s prediction came true
After this Lata and her sister Meena started learning music from their father. Younger brother Hridaynath was only four years old when his father died. His father may not have seen the daughter becoming a singer, but he had an idea of Lata’s success, which was good astrology.
According to Lata, her father had said that she would be so successful that no one would even touch her heights. Also, Lata also believes that if the father were alive, he would never become a singer, because he would not get permission for this.
Family handled since the age of 13
After her father’s death, Lata took charge of the family and came to Mumbai with her sister Meena to work for Master Vinayak. At the age of 13, he acted in the film ‘Pahili Mangalagaur’ in 1942. In some films he has played the role of sister of hero-heroine, but he never enjoyed acting. For the first time recording ‘Love is Blind’, but the film stuck.
This is how the first big break got
Music composer Ghulam Hyder listened to 18-year-old Lata and introduced Shashadhar Mukherjee, a successful filmmaker of that era. Shashadhar has clearly said that this voice is very thin, will not work. Then Master Ghulam Haider gave Lata a chance to sing with singer Mukesh in the song ‘English Chhora Chala Gaya’ from the film ‘forced’. This was Lata’s first major break, after which she never lacked work. Later Sashadhar admitted his mistake and sang many songs from Lata in films like ‘Anarkali’, ‘Jiddi’.
Never avoided pickle-pepper
In the golden days of her career, she used to eat ice cream before recording the song and she never avoided things like pickle, chilli. His voice was always unaffected. She was the first Indian to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1974.
When Lata remembers her journey, she does not forget her recording nights of her early days. Then there were shoots during the day and songs were recorded on the studio floor in the heat of the night. Recording continued until morning and AC fans were replaced.
