The central government has constituted a 4-member committee to re-examine the grace marks controversy in NEET-UG. This information was given by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on Saturday.

NTA Director General Subodh Kumar Singh said that the committee has been asked to submit its report in a week. After this, it will be decided what to do next.

Questions are being raised on the result of NEET-UG 2024. NTA has given grace marks to 1563 students. It is alleged that due to this, 67 students got All India Rank 1. 24 lakh children appeared in NEET-UG 2024. The result came on 4 June.

After the results were announced on June 4 in Bikaner, the children fed sweets to each other.

Director General Singh said that our committee will investigate 1563 candidates and 6 centers where grace marks have been given. We have CCTVs for monitoring the centers. We also have reports of the centers. These centers are from Meghalaya, Bahadurgarh (Haryana), Dantewada, Balod (Chhattisgarh), Surat (Gujarat) and Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, petitions have been filed in Delhi and Calcutta High Courts against the irregularities in the results. Allegations have been made such as increased number of toppers in the exam, giving grace marks different from the marking scheme, changes in the answer key and paper leak before the exam.

NTA Director General Subodh Kumar Singh held a press conference on Saturday.

NTA said- if needed, the result will be revised

  • Singh said, ‘Giving grace marks to students has not affected the results or the qualifying criteria. He said that this is an issue of only 1563 students. More than 23 lakh students had given the paper. This is an issue of only 6 centres instead of 4750 centres.
  • ‘The committee will investigate the grace marks and time loss given to 1563 students. If needed, their results will be revised. This will not affect the admission process of MBBS, BDS and other medical courses after the NEET results. We will take a decision based on the recommendations of the committee.’
  • ‘The paper that came on social media came after the paper started. We will strengthen our protocols and standards in future so that such a mistake does not happen again.’

Students’ questions regarding NEET UG 2024

How come there are 6 toppers in the same exam center
In the merit list of NEET toppers, the roll numbers of 8 students are from the same series. Out of the total 8 students from serial number 62 to 69, 6 students secured rank-1. All of them got 720 out of 720 marks. All of them had given the exam at the same exam center in Bahadurgarh.

How to get numbers 718, 719
Many students were given 718, 719 marks. NTA had said that these marks were given to them as grace marks. Actually, the NEET paper is of 720 marks. Four marks are given for each question. One mark is deducted for every mistake. Now in such a situation, if someone leaves just one question, he will get 716 marks. If someone gets just one question wrong, he will get 715 marks. In such a situation, it is impossible to get 718, 719 marks.

Why were grace marks implemented without any information
Students say why were grace marks given without any information? Students are demanding the release of the original merit list of NEET without grace marks. Students also demand that the names of the centers where grace marks were given should be disclosed.

What is the basis for getting grace marks
Students also want to ask what is the basis for getting grace marks? How many marks were given for so much time wasted?

This year the NEET-UG exam was held on May 5, 2024. For this, 557 exam centers were set up across the country and 14 abroad.

About 24 lakh students had registered
This year a total of 23.81 lakh students had registered for the exam. Last year 20.87 lakh students had given the exam. Shubham Rai, director of Haldwani’s coaching institute NEETIIT Academy, says that 4 lakh more candidates registered for the exam, but the difficulty level of the paper was not increased in this ratio.

Compared to last year, the Chemistry and Biology sections were easy. Physics was difficult. In such a situation, it is possible that out of 24 lakh students from across the country, 20-23 students score 720/720. However, due to bonus marks, 44 more students got perfect scores.
