Here’s to 2021 – What’s coming is better than what’s going………hopefully !

Whew, what a year this has been ! A real killjoy ……if only I could rap it on the knuckles like our teachers did ! And guess what, stupid as we are, or let’s say “programmed” as we are since childhood, we are hoping–nay, we are sure– that as soon as the clock strikes midnight on December 31, annus horribilis (2020) will miraculously be replaced by annus mirabilis (2021) ! Hey, c’mon, you don’t really believe that, do you ? Actually, you do. And so do most of us. We are by nature optimistic (some may read that as "unrealistic" but that’s their problem, not ours ) and hope springs eternal , right ? And that very hope prompts us to believe that there is a roseate, albeit remote future out there. Amen.

Yeah, it IS true that 2020 shortchanged us, gave us the third degree, hauled us over the coals, baptised us by fire, pulled us through excreta street and made us reshuffle our priorities. But have we finally faced it all ? Unlikely. We know deep in our hearts that the monster coronavirus isn’t going away in a hurry and any vaccine isn’t going to work a miracle in so short a time……. Covid-19 surely has us by the short and curly. Accept it. And so this year we ain’t gonna grab our pompoms and break into any bust-thrusting, butt-wriggling cheerleader routine to welcome 2021. Period.

BUT it is also true that 2020 taught us quite a few life lessons (yeah, mindfulness and wellness coaches a-plenty have been waxing eloquent on this theme). We learnt to value the small collectibles of life, the things that really matter……time spent with family, minimalism (yeah, we were surprised to know that our basic needs are really not that much !), self-dependence, empathy, and so on. Many of us have dealt with personal tragedies, loss of loved ones, indiscriminately and unstintingly handed out pink slips and, in general, we all have had to battle our inner Eeyore.

To put it succintly, we learnt all too well that “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans” and also that life has a way of changing a hundred and eighty degrees without a moment’s warning ! Thankfully life is also about second chances……and after so much loss, so much horror caused by the pandemic, we should learn to take pleasure in, even laugh at the small, predictable joys of life for after all, laughter is our warmest comfort blanket. Come to think of it, since the year has been generally shitty (not discounting the lessons learnt, of course), doesn’t that seem like all the more reason to celebrate (safely)? We made it! We survived! We can only hope 2021 will be happier and healthier, right? So, welcome, 2021! Here’s hoping you can’t be worse than last year. Spoiler Alert: We’re still frog-marching over landmines……….social distancing, guys.

And just to prove that I am really getting into the mood to welcome the new year, I’ll quote some of the biggies who will say it much better than I will.

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” — C.S. Lewis

“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering, ‘It will be happier.’” —
Alfred Lord Tennyson

“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” — Oprah Winfrey

Pssst…….the 1st day of January (of any damn year) does not change your life. It just reminds you that one more year has gone and you’re still the same dumb moron who thinks that he is on the brink of a magical year. LOL.
