Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which commences the new year on January 1, the Hindu New Year starts with the arrival of the Chaitra month. The year starts with Navratri in the Chaitra month, while the Phalgun month marks the culmination of the Hindu calendar.

On the Hindu New Year, various communities celebrate their respective festivals. The Sindhi community observes Cheti Chand, while Maharashtra celebrates Gudi Padwa. In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, it’s known as Yugadi, and in Telangana, it’s called Ugadi. The Konkani community in Goa and Kerala celebrates it as well. Additionally, it’s known as Samvatsar Padva, Navreh in Kashmir, and Sajibu Nongma Panba in Manipur.

Hindu New Year 2024: History

According to local legend, Vikramaditya, the revered king of Ujjain, is said to have freed his subjects from the dominance of the Sakas nearly 2068 years ago. Historians suggest that the traditional Indian calendar, Vikram Samvat, is set 57 years ahead of the widely used Gregorian calendar. This year marks Vikram Samvat 2081.

The Hindu New Year, or Vikram Samvat, is observed on the first day of the Shukla Paksha of the Chaitra month and is known for its mathematical precision. In several states, the Hindu New Year commences on the first day of the Hindu month of Baishakh.

Hindu New Year 2024: Significance

It signifies the commencement of the New Year according to the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. According to Drik Panchang, Chaitra Shukla Pratipada Tithi begins on April 8, 2024, at 11:50 PM, and ends on April 9 at 8:30 PM. Chaitra Navratri Ghatasthapana Muhurata starts from 6:02 AM to 10:16 AM, while the Kalash Sthapana Abhijit Muhurat starts between 11:57 AM and 12:48 PM.
