After Hollywood’s first sound film The Jazz Singer came out in 1927, Hollywood’s famous studio Warner Bros also wanted to experiment in sound films. At that point the studio hired Hollywood writer Daniel F. Johnk, who was then writing an epic romantic story based on the famous Biblical character Noah and during World War I. They combined the two stories, which was titled Noah’s Ark.

Michael Kargit was hired to direct the film, who had become famous after making 68 films in Denmark, Hungary and Australia.

The story of Noah’s Ark is the love story of Travis and his wife Mary, who are separated during World War I. His story is compared to the story of the Bible.

The makers were not ready to leave any stone unturned to make the film big. He wanted it to be the best film of all time in film history. For this, to make every scene look real, he built huge sets in the studio and cast 10,000 people.

Deadly flood scenes and accidents

The flood scene was to be shown in the climax of the film. According to the script, apart from the lead actors of the film, all the extras were to be shown trapped in the flood. 7500 extras were called on the set for this scene.

Director Michael Curtis and producer Darryl Janak wanted to record the real reactions of all the extras to being caught in a flood. With this intention, he told his team that no one was told about this scene.

The makers called cinematographer Hal Mohr and informed him about the scene. They were given instructions that 23 lakh liters of water would be poured on the crowd and their reactions would be recorded in one go as soon as they ran away.

The cinematographer was stunned to hear this idea of ​​the director, because he knew that it could be dangerous to do so. He said – what will happen to those extras amidst so much water and flow. Got the answer – those people will save their lives.

The cinematographer flatly refused to shoot the dangerous scene and left the set.

The director’s madness to get the right shot was such that he did not even try to find out whether everyone knew how to swim or not. As soon as action was taken, 23 lakh liters of water was poured on 7500 people, so that flood could be created. The water was thrown so fast that many people hit the set made of concrete, many got drowned. There were many big stones on the set, in which many people’s bones were broken due to collision. There was a hue and cry and people actually started running for their lives.

3 people died due to drowning in water

As soon as the scene was completed, many people were injured due to the flood, many had broken bones. 3 people had died. He didn’t know how to swim. There was also a person who was so badly injured that his leg had to be amputated. The number of injured people can be gauged from the fact that 35 ambulances had to be called to take the injured to the set.

The ship built in the set was used in hundreds of films

A giant ship was erected at the Iverson Movie Ranch for the film’s opening shot. The ship, which was not scrapped after filming, was later used in hundreds of Hollywood films, including 1939’s Stagecoach.

The shooting of the film was started in 1925, when only silent films were made. About 80% of the film was shot when Hollywood’s first sound film, The Jazz Singer, was released in 1927. Seeing the success of the film, Warner Brothers also tried to convert it into a sound film. Parts of the film were recorded with sound, making it a part-talkie film (films that were silent, but with the advent of sound films added sound).

Makers adopted a special method of film promotion

In the poster released before the film’s release, it was written that this film is going to be the biggest drama film to reach the motion picture screen. In which more than 10 thousand people worked and which has been made in several million.

The film was released on 1 November 1928. This original film was of 135 minutes. When the film was released, Warner Bros. was unhappy with it. He felt that adding sound made the film awkward. He stopped the release of the film. He got half an hour scenes removed from the film.

Six months later, on 15 June 1929, the 108-minute film was re-released. The film was a success upon re-release and earned $1 million, double its cost. In terms of earnings, it was Warner Bros.’s most successful film till then.

Despite earning twice the budget, the film was not liked by the critics and the audience. The American weekly magazine The New Yorkers called Noah’s Ark the worst film in the world. And the New York Times wrote that this is a test of a person’s patience.
