Holy Monday 2024: History

Holy Monday holds a significant place in Christian tradition as the day when Jesus Christ cleansed the praying site in Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, during the Passover feast, Jesus and his disciples arrived at the holy site and were dismayed to find it turned into a marketplace.

Seeing merchants and money changers exploiting the sacred space for profit, Jesus overturned their tables and drove them out, declaring, “My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of thieves.” This act symbolised Jesus’ rejection of corruption and exploitation within religious institutions and marked a pivotal moment in his ministry, challenging the religious authorities of the time.

This day serves as a time for introspection and readiness for the events of Holy Week. Christians reflect on Jesus’ teachings, miracles, and the ultimate sacrifice he made during his crucifixion.
