The 70th national convention of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is going to be held in Gorakhpur. In such a situation, the entire city is covered with banners and posters of ABVP. But, a big uproar was created when the memorials and statues of martyrs in the city were also covered with poster-holding.

The local people as well as the opposition people not only expressed their displeasure over this but also termed it as playing with the honor of the martyrs. In fact, the Amar Shaheed Shiv Singh Kshetri Memorial located in Railway Colony, which narrates the immortal story of sacrifice and bravery. It has been covered with posters and banners.

Councilor expressed displeasure The incident occurred during the campaign for the 70th national convention of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). But this method of publicity has not only hurt the sentiments of the city residents but has also raised serious questions on the honor of the martyrs.

Expressing displeasure over this incident, Railway Colony councilor Vivek Mishra alias Vicky said that this is a gross disrespect towards the martyrs. He said, โ€œInsulting the martyrs will neither be accepted nor tolerated. The administration should take immediate cognizance and take strict action against the culprits.โ€ The councilor warned the administration that such misuse of sacred places like martyr memorial should not happen again.

City strewn with promotional material To promote the ABVP convention, posters and banners have been put up at every major intersection and road in Gorakhpur. But the incident of putting up posters at the memorial site has increased the anger of the local residents. People say that historical places like martyrs’ memorials should be kept free from publicity, because these places are symbols of our national pride.

Serious questions raised on administration After the incident, the negligence of the administration has also come under question. Local people say that such incidents happen only when the administration fails to fulfill its responsibilities. The residents of the city have demanded that the administration take immediate action and remove all promotional material from the monument and make strict rules to prevent such incidents in future.

Appeal for restoration of honor of martyrs Conscious citizens and organizations of the city have demanded immediate removal of the posters put up at the martyr’s memorial. He says that respect for martyrs should be shown not only in words but in actions. Also, he urged all the organizations to select such places for publicity which will not hurt anyone’s sentiments.

Are we able to protect the legacy that the martyrs have handed over by sacrificing their lives?
