World Championship medalists Amit Panghal and Shiva Thapa have confirmed their place in the Indian boxing squad for the Commonwealth Games-2022, while CWG-2018 silver medalist Manish Kaushik has lost the trial bout. Amit and Shiv registered a landslide victory in the ongoing selection trials at NIS Patiala.
After the trial, the Indian boxing team was announced for this multi-sports tournament going to be held in Birmingham on Thursday. India will challenge in eight weight categories in the games to be held from 28 July to 8 August.
Rohit, Sumit, Ashish, Sanjeet and Sagar are the new faces
Panghal, the silver medalist of the 2019 World Championships, will be competing in 51kg and Thapa in 63.5kg. Apart from these two, six other boxers have made it to Team India. Of these, five have been selected in the CWG team for the first time. Mo. Apart from Hasmuddin (57kg), Rohit Tokas (67kg), Sumit (75kg), Ashish Kumar (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg) and Sagar (92+kg) are included.
Panghal would like to change the color of Gold Coast’s medal
Amit Panghal defeated boxer Deepak of Services by a mixed decision of 4-1. Improving his performance in the CWG, he would like to change the color of the silver he received at Gold Coast-2018 to golden.
Thapa beats Kaushik
Shiv Thapa, who became a member of the athletes committee last week, registered a one-sided 5-0 win over last Commonwealth Games silver medalist Manish Kaushik in 57kg. In other matches, Husmuddin defeated Asian Championship silver medalist Kavinder Singh Bisht, Rohit defeated Aditya Pratap Yadav of UP. At the same time, Sumit, Ashish, Sanjeet and Sagar have won their respective matches.
Women’s trials next week
The Indian women’s team trials for these games will be held next week. Let us tell you that in the last Commonwealth Games, India finished second.
