Ayhika Mukherjee defeated world number-8 Shin Yubin and Jeon Jihee.
The Indian women’s team has caused a major upset in the Asian Table Tennis Championship. The team defeated Paris Olympics bronze medalist South Korea 3-2 in the quarter-final match and secured a medal by making it to the top-4.
Ayhika Mukherjee played an important role in this victory. The world number 92 Indian player defeated world number-8 Shin Yubin and world number 16 Jeon Jihee. The Indian women’s team will face Japan on Wednesday.
With this victory, the Indian women’s team secured its first medal in the Asian Championship organized by the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU). Indian women had won bronze in the 1960 edition organized by the now defunct Table Tennis Federation of Asia. That means India has won a medal in the tournament after 64 years.

Ayhika reached the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics. Was not a part of the Indian women’s team, but returned to the team after Archana Kamath’s retirement. Ayhika had defeated world number-1 player Sun Yingsa of China in the World Team Championship earlier this year.
