According to a report by CNBC, three apps — Widgetsmith, Color Widgets and Photo Widget — have been downloaded a whopping seven million times since September 16. Interestingly, Widgetsmith was launched on September 16 itself and has seen 2 million downloads, as per Sensor Tower. Both Color Widgets and Photo Widget too were launched on September 16 and have been downloaded combined 5 million times in the last six days.
The three apps customise the home screen of the iPhone by — you guessed it right — adding widgets of your choice. Customisation, something that has been a staple Android feature for years now, has caught the fancy of iPhone users across the world and hence the rise in popularity of these three particular apps.
Widgetsmith offers customisable widgets that include the date, weather, astronomy. These widgets can be adjusted and appear on your home screen as per the settings you choose. It is a free app but does offer in-app purchases that allow you to get the best out of the app.
Color Widgets has preset widget designs but also allows iPhone users to create their own designs as well. With a host of options to choose from, users can give their home screen a different look.
Photo Widget, on the other hand, utilises the photo library on the iPhone to create widgets. Users can add anywhere between 1 to 6 photos in a widget and then can view them in full screen by just tapping on them.
This might just be a fad as users get accustomed to the new widgets feature on iOS 14 but apps like the above three are clearly cashing in on the ‘craze’.
