One of the most popular annual sporting events, the Indian Premier League is set to make a return for the 17th time this year. Starting from March, India will be celebrating its annual T20 extravaganza as 10 franchises compete for glory once again.
The tournament opener is set to be played between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and defending champions Chennai Super Kings on March 22.
Among the several individual prizes to be won in the IPL this year is the highly-illustrious Purple Cap. This prize is awarded to the bowler who has picked up the most scalps by the end of the campaign. 2023- Mohammad Shami (GT, 28 wickets)
The Purple Cap winner last season was Gujarat Titan’s speedster Mohammad Shami. His 28-wicket haul spearheaded Gujarat Titans to a second successive final against Chennai Super Kings. Shami achieved the feat in 17 games while maintaining an economy of 18.64.
2022- Yuzvendra Chahal (RR, 27 wickets)
Rajasthan Royals spinner Yuzvendra Chahal claimed 27 wickets to win the Purple Cap in 2022. He achieved the incredible stat while maintaining an impressive economy of 7.75 and an average of 19.52. His heroics were enough to help Rajasthan Royals reach the final but eventually, they lost to Gujarat Titans.
2021- Harshal Patel (RCB, 32 wickets)
Harshal Patel displayed impressive performances when he scalped 32 wickets for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2021. Patel played just 15 games and bowled at an average of 14.34 to win the Purple Cap that season.
2020- Kagiso Rabada(DC, 30 wickets)
Kagiso Rabada’s 30-wicket haul for Delhi Capitals earned him the Purple Cap in 2020. In the 17 games that Rabada played, he bowled at an average of 18.26 while maintaining an economy of 8.34.
2019- Imran Tahir (CSK, 26 wickets)
South African spinner Imran Tahir took home the purple cap for his 26-wicket haul in a Chennai Super Kings shirt in 2019. He bowled at an economy of 6.69 and an average of 16.57.
2018- Andrew Tye (PBKS, 24 wickets)
Andrew Tye won the Purple Cap in 2018 in 14 games for Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) in 2018. He claimed 24 scalps at an average of 18.66 while maintaining an economy of 8.
2017- Bhuvneshwar Kumar (SRH, 26 wickets)
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 26 scalps for Sunrisers Hyderabad won him his second successive Purple Cap in 2017. Bowling at an economy of 7.05, the SRH pacer achieved impressive figures in 14 games.
2016- Bhuvneshwar Kumar (SRH, 23 wickets)
Bhuvneshwar Kumar won his maiden Purple Cap in 2016 when he took 23 wickets for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The franchise had won the IPL title that season having beaten Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final.
2015- Dwayne Bravo( CSK, 26 wickets)
West Indies star Dwayne Bravo bagged 26 scalps to finish as the Purple Cap winner in 2015. Despite Bravo’s individual success, Chennai Super Kings ended up losing the final to Mumbai Indians.
2014- Mohit Sharma (CSK, 23 wickets)
Chennai Super Kings pacer Mohit Sharma bagged 23 scalps to win the Purple Cap in 2014. The MS Dhoni-led side, however, lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the final that season.
2013- Dwayne Bravo (CSK, 32 wickets)
Dwayne Bravo’s first Purple Cap triumph came in 2013 for the Chennai Super Kings when he took 32 wickets. Boasting an impressive average of 15.53, Bravo’s spectacular bowling secured yet another final for the MS Dhoni-led side.
2012- Morne Morkel (DD, 25 wickets)
Morne Morkel’s impressive 25-wicket haul in Delhi Daredevils shirt earned him the Purple Cap in 2012. He played 16 games that season, bowling at an average of 18.12 and an economy of 7.19.
2011- Lasith Malinga (MI, 28 wickets)
Sri Lankan pace icon Lasith Malinga scalped 28 wickets in 2011 to seal the Purple Cap. Playing for Mumbai Indians, Malinga bowled at an average of 13.39 and an economy of 5.95 that season.
2010- Pragyan Ojha (DC, 21 wickets)
Pragyan Ojha bagged 21 wickets for the Deccan Chargers to win the Purple Cap in 2010. He finished the tournament with an economy of 7.29 and an average of 20.42.
2009- RP Singh (DC, 23 wickets)
RP Singh won the Purple Cap in 2009, having claimed 23 wickets for the Deccan Chargers. His impressive haul was enough to help DC claim the title under Adam Gilchrist’s leadership.
2008- Sohail Tanvir (RR, 22 wickets)
The first-ever Purple Cap winner in IPL history was Rajasthan Royal’s Sohail Tanvir. His 22-wicket haul in the campaign was enough to seal the inaugural title for Rajasthan Royals.
