Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore revealed that Shreyas Iyer was one of their top retentions.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore opened up why Shreyas Iyer was not retained ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction.
KKR’s IPL winning captain is also back in the auction pool after his discussions with the management failed as felt that as an IPL-winning captain, he deserved way more than his Rs 12.25 crore existing salary, a belief that was not shared by the KKR bosses.
Kolkata Knight Riders named Rinku Singh (INR 13 Crore), Sunil Narine (INR 12 Crore), Andre Russell (INR 12 Crore), Varun Chakravarthy (INR 12 Crore), Harshit Rana (INR 4 Crore) and Ramandeep Singh (INR 4 Crore) as their retentions.
Venky Mysore revealed in a recent interview that Shreyas Iyer was one of their top retentions after he was bought by KKR in 2022 for INR 12.25 Crore.

“The interesting thing about retention is that there are so many aspects to it and forces as play. But what is fundamental to a retention that most people sometimes don’t understand that it’s a matter of mutually agreeing. It’s not a one-sided right that a franchise has. The player also has to consider various factors and agree,” Mysore was quoted as saying to Rev Sports.
“Sometimes along the line that agreement doesn’t happen because of various factors; money or somebody wants to test their value or whatever it is. That influences a decision as well, eventually, but he was No.1 on our list.”
“He’s captain and we have to build around that leadership and we picked him in 2022 specifically for that. Unfortunately, he was injured in 2023. The moment he came back, he got his captaincy back. He was an integral part, did a terrific job and I enjoyed a personal rapport with him. But at the end of the day, people also have to make their own decisions and decide on what’s best for them and the direction that want to go,” Mysore added.
‘Hot Commodity’
Shreyas Iyer may have multiple franchises interested.
“GMR, one of the co-owners have great faith in Iyer. He has been promised captaincy and if need be, DC with their handsome auction purse of nearly Rs 75 crore, can go north of Rs 20 crore,” top official of a franchise told PTI.
“There won’t be too many teams that would want Iyer the T20 batter but just to ensure DC spends a bomb on a player, they might engage in a bidding war for Iyer,” another IPL franchise official said.
