A video of a leopard trying to hunt a pack of wild dogs while they were sleeping in the heat of the day has surfaced on the internet.
The animal kingdom’s nerve-wracking duels never fail to pique our interest. We often come across such videos that have us on the edge of our seats, waiting with bated breaths to see what happens next. What’s most amazing about such videos is that they show that it’s all about survival in the wild. Filled with suspense, entertaining, and terrifying moments, these videos are jam-packed with how animals attack and operate to survive.
One such video of a leopard trying to hunt a pack of wild dogs while they were sleeping in the heat of the day has surfaced on the internet. Needless to say, it has caught the sight of many and is going crazy viral. Captured by photographer John Fabiano in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, the video unfolds to show a leopard slowly creeping up to four wild dogs, almost attempting to hunt them.
The magnificent cheetah is known for its fast speed, which can reach speeds up to 100 kmph in just three seconds. But it won’t be that easy to hunt wild dogs that have the best hearing and sense of smell in the kingdom.
It was around 7:30 am when the shutterbug stopped by to take photos of the sleeping canines as wild dogs are endangered, making each sighting precious. He took time to capture the beauty of these wild dogs when he spotted a leopard behind a bush. With its eyes set on the dogs, the photographer captured the leopard using the wind and bushes to its advantage and moving stealthily towards the dogs.
The leopard was careful not to make a sound, placing each paw precisely so that the wild dogs could not be alerted. The leopard, with its silent movements, reached within a few metres of the sleeping dogs with the probable aim of attacking them.
Just then, the dynamics shifted as one wild dog lifted its head and saw the leopard a few metres from it. Then what? The leopard turned in shock and began running for life, and without wasting a second, the dogs ensued a chase and all took off behind the leopard.

The clip was shared on the YouTube channel Latest Sightings. Within a few days of being posted, the video went viral on the video-sharing platform, with more than 3 million views and over 2,900 likes. From praising the dogs’ agility to the leopard’s furtive movements, the social media users had a lot to say about the nail-biting video.
Praising the leopard’s stealthiness, a user asserted, “Just goes to show you how absolutely stealthy a leopard is. Wild dogs have some of the best hearing and sense of smell in the animal kingdom, and they had no idea the leopard was right there the whole time.”
“It’s just amazing how the dogs woke up and became very agile immediately, chasing the leopard away,” a comment read.
“The leopard is not used to such confident and bold food. It got confused because the dogs seemed to not mind his/her presence. Young leopard is still learning how to do it right and many other things in the wild. Hunter turned out to be the Hunted,” a user quipped.
Impressed by the dogs’ bold move, a user commended, “Love that the dogs went after the Leopard after waking up. No chill at all.”
“Honestly, the wild dogs were quite lucky that it wasn’t a lion. Quite a bold move to sleep in the open when there are bigger predators lurking around,” another wrote.
“By the looks of it, this is a young leopard that seemed to be more curious than hungry,” an account remarked.
Indeed, a spine-tingling video!
