India has sent eleven jujutsukas to take part in the 19th edition of the Asian Games, underway in Hangzhou, China. The Indian contingent comprising four men and seven women will compete across four weight categories. The Ju-Jitsu events at the Hangzhou Games will be hosted at the Xiaoshan Linpu Gymnasium from October 5 to October 7. Ju-Jitsu is a sport that actually belongs to the family of Japanese martial arts and first emerged in the 16th century. The literal meaning of “ju-jitsu” is a fight between two individuals, primarily unarmed. The sport demands skill and finesse more than physical strength.

Ju-Jitsu became a part of the Asian Games in 2018. At the Jakarta Games, the men’s events featured four weight categories, while the women’s competition had two. However, the 2023 Asiad will see four weight categories in each men’s and women’s ju-jitsu events. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) dominated the 2018 Games, securing a total of nine medals. They won gold in the men’s 56kg and 94kg events. Kazakhstan were second in the tally with two golds to their name. India did not participate in the ju-jitsu events in 2018 and will hope for a memorable debut this time.
