Actor Daya Shankar Pandey, who has done films like ‘Ghulam’, ‘Lagaan’, ‘Gangaajal’ and ‘Swades’, is also seen in the TV show ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’. Apart from this, he is also playing the role of narrator Pandit Radheshyam in ‘Tulsidham Ke Laddu Gopal’ being aired on Shemaroo TV these days. In a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Daya Shankar Pandey talked about this show and his career…
Daya Shankar is seen in this look in the TV show Tulsidham Ke Laddu Gopal.
What kind of character are you playing in ‘Tulsidham Ke Laddu Gopal’?
I am playing the role of a narrator in this show. Tulsidham is the heritage of my forefathers and it has been preserved by our forefathers. They want to build a temple of Laddu Gopal at this religious place but some land mafia wants to capture it.
This is where the story begins. I lose courage in this fight, but the show’s lead actress Akshita Mudgal who plays my daughter Tulsi takes command. She fights this battle and I keep taking the name of God.
Is this show of limited episodes?
Look, the truth is that no one knows how long a show will last. Yes, it is definitely that if the show does well, then the channel will not stop it. This is the law of this world, which we all know. If the show doesn’t work, then no matter how well we do, it will be closed.
Daya has earlier worked with Aamir Khan in the film Lagaan. In this he played the role of spinner Goli.
He has played the lead role in many shows. Why did you do this role in this show and how did you get it?
There are two reasons for this – one is friendship and the other is the story and good role. The writer and producer of this show is Saini Sahab, he wrote the serial ‘Shanidev’. He is like a friend, so said in a friendly manner that you have to do this role. He is turning producer for the first time. Along with friendship, there was an interesting role, clean and religious-social combined show, so I was also feeling good.
You have been a part of most of the religious shows. Was there any strategy to do such shows or is it just a coincidence?
You have observed correctly. I believe that the thoughts you have, the Lord serves the same kind of food in your plate. My aim is that if I have chosen the medium of art, then good thoughts also reach people. If even two out of 10 family members change their lives by being influenced by my shows, then there is great happiness.
Even today, on meeting many people say that seeing ‘Mahima Shanidev Ki’, there has been a lot of change in my life. Happy to hear this. Looks like the hard work paid off. ‘Shanidev’ was a cautionary show that did not run on sinful deeds.
Daya played the role of Shani Dev in the TV show ‘Mahima Shani Dev Ki’.
I think that if everyone follows the path of their religion then no one can do any harm. You have to have great courage. Such shows come, then after thinking in my mind, I try to compromise so that the family can also feel proud that my father or husband does such work. This makes my wife and children happy too.
Will be seen in any series and film as well?
Doing Pankaj Tripathi starrer ‘Main Atal Hoon’. I am in the role of Deendayal Upadhyay in this. Atal ji considered Deendayal Upadhyay equal to his teacher and father. The schedule of this film has ended only last month. The film is going to release by December.
It was challenging for me to play this character as well. I never thought that I would play the role of Deendayal Upadhyay. He did a look test and got selected. It has been shot in Kanpur, Lucknow and Mumbai.
Apart from this, I am doing one or two more films which are being produced by my friend’s sons. I will talk about that too when the time comes. Currently doing ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma’ and ‘Tulsidham Ke Laddu Gopal’ on TV.
Daya Shankar is seen in the role of Inspector Chalu Pandey in the TV show ‘Taarak Mehta..’.
Is there any role you still wish to play?
By the way, after hearing and seeing many roles, there is a desire to do them. But there is a great desire since years to play Rajesh Khanna ji in ‘Anand’ and Gabbar Singh of ‘Sholay’. Don’t copy and mimic it, but do that kind of role, because there is a scope for such a role.
Very lucky are those people who get the kind of role they think of and get it. I believe that every role has its own destiny. It is decided by the above. It is the imagination of the mind that I should do this role or that role.
